Anyone using vegemite as a nutrient?
I have seen a few very old threads... Just wondering if anyone is currently using vegemite as a yeast nutrient?
If you are using it please chime in.
Ken to know the dose, why you use it over other nutrient, any impact to the flavour and what you are fermenting? Rum etc
Let the discussion begin.

{Interestingly, Marmite was invented by Justus von Liebig. Yep. That Liebig.}

Re: Anyone using vegemite as a nutrient?
Dunno about that Fizz...seems he invented Marmite .....But "Liebig condenser is used for condensing of vapours that pass trough the centre tube. It is cooled with water that passes in the outer tube (shell around the centre tube) in the opposite direction than the one of hot vapour. Though named after the German chemist Justus von Liebig (1803-1873), he cannot be given credit for having invented it because it had already been in use for some time before him."

Re: Anyone using vegemite as a nutrient?
I used around 1/2 tsp of it in my last wash which was struggling at 1.028. It certainly made the yeast happy again.
That was a gen 2 of Odin's Rye bread whiskey. I couldn't smell it when it was done (unlike some multivitimins I've used in other recipes).
Don't know if I'd smell/taste it in a neutral wash. I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

That’s interesting. For the record,I make rum and bourbon. Vegemite has such a strong flavor and I certainly don’t want any carry over.SaltyStaves wrote:I used around 1/2 tsp of it in my last wash which was struggling at 1.028. It certainly made the yeast happy again.

Leave it to the crow eaters to stick vegemite in perfectly good whiskey...

I figure for a rye, a small amount would get lost. So I was feeling brave.
I know someone who adds it to their neutral washes when they are struggling. Having tasted some of their product, I am fairly confident they know what they are doing.

NZ Marmite has potassium, which would be beneficial, but I'm not convinced that the additional sugar and iron and flavourings are.johnsparrow wrote:One word, Marmite.

I think it's banned in the USofA. Isn't it the same as adding dead yeast and B vitamin? I will try it next time if dig up an old jar in the dark corners of my fridge.

Pretty much. I think the advantage is that the jar can sit around for years and if you need it in a hurry, its good to go. With any luck, you won't need it that often.aircarbonarc wrote:Isn't it the same as adding dead yeast and B vitamin?

I’m pretty sure that since the UN ruling in 2013, you’re not allowed to feed vegemite to anything, let alone Yeast.

Re: Anyone using vegemite as a nutrient?
If ya all worried about the taste of Vegemite carrying over why don't ya try a good ole mouthful of fertizer ya using and see what ya reckon when ya get done with that
. As for using marmite we folks use cow shit and I can't see marmite being that much worse
I don't mind Vegemite , promite is ok to and even bobtail but marmite is like blenky tar , ya need a pointing trowel and mighty tough bread to spread it, good for sealing windscreens though. Personally I go with tomato paste and a bit of Epsom salts if I need nutrients as it is more cost effective. A while back some buecrat and stupid arsed reporter that paid him undue creadance stirred up a storm in a tea cup about Vegemite hooch being knocked up on dry missions (was a complete fabrication of course)
That said at the prison farm back home the boys would get a pumpkin or melon out in the field cut a hidden bung in it mash down the inside and fill it with sugar water Vegemite and yeast. Next time they were out there picking they had hooch. Them guys sure were cunning, beside one of the cottages was a workmanship cavity they dug it out so they had a fair cellar under one of the staff buildings, vented it in the wall and had a pretty cool still running off kettle elements down there. God knows for how long,
Only got busted coz one old lag belted hell out of another inmate for stealing grog
I'm assuming there were only using enough Vegemite for nuets not flavour else that would be some mean tasting pruno.
