I was at a Wal-Mart the other day.
they had their 1/2 whisky barrel planters on clearance.
$25 instead of $49.97
if you use oak sticks or dominoes would be a way to get lots pretty cheap.
Could even use them on the grill for an oak/whisky smoke too.

I’ve done this and one stave cut into fingers and toasted will last a while. This a very economical source of oak which is also already seasoned to a certain extent.
Cheers!

Re: Whisky barrel planters
Have to say I would be concerned that they may have been "processed" into planters including possible spray with chemicals.
I went to a local lumberyard and told them I needed raw untreated wood to turn white whiskey.
"I don't make it, I just like to age it myself".
They seemed disappointed.

Re: Whisky barrel planters
Dunno about Walmart, but at Lowe's near me they have them stacked outside, bottom up, getting rained on and filling up with spider webs for $45 or so.
They say Jack Daniels on the heads and still smell strongly of whisky, so it doesn't seem like these are treated much at all. They're heavy as heck with really rusty bands on them. They still have the char on the inside which seems like a very thin layer and basically delaminates if you pick at it. They're interesting, and I may go get one.
I assume JD toasts them and chars them. So do folks here just sand off the dirt and old char and re-toast and re-char them?
