This egg nog i made was created from recipes found, and absolutely no experience whatsoever. I haven't even tasted egg nog ever. Reading a bit more I see that egg nog is supposed to be served with whipped egg whites mixed back in. Is that how you serve your egg nog as well? Or do you serve it directly from the jar? Or maybe like I did, mixed with fresh milk to taste?

My nog came out really, REALLY tasty. Had half a couple weeks ago at family Xmas, will enjoy the other half over Xmas proper at my friends' home in IL. The cognac, rum, and bourbon contributed their own flavors, it needed no dilution. The bourbon gave an oaky, vanillan flavor, the rum all of it's complexities (using my own and Appletons) and fruity notes, and then the cognac gave a very complex fruitiness and richness. I didn't even grate any more nutmeg on it to serve, just shook it lightly then drank away. Sooo good.
I read, I write, I still.

I've never done it like that but it's an old drink and there are likely several "legit" ways to make it. But really, whatever works for you is enjoyable to those who you share it with is the way to go. First time I made my own was last year. It was different (way better) than store bought, but I didn't age it. Next time :) . I was disappointed I didn't jump on this process back in September... now it's a little too late for this year. But next year yes, aging yes, home made alcohol yes, backyard eggs yes, backyard dairy... well I'll need to get a cow first :( , whipped eggs... not planning on it, but tell me how it turns out Rubel.

I went for the simple life and mixed my 22%ABV egg nog custard with equal amounts of fresh milk and shared on christmas eve and christmas day. Mixed reception. My elder brother and sister didn't like it much. But my parents really loved it to the tune of actually asking if they could get some of what I made for fireplace evenings. I count that as a raging success. We're talking about the two people that drink so little that I have never in my 45 years of life seen them even slightly tipsy. They both clicked with my creamy, nutmegy, egg nog. ( Way better than that advocaat stuff- my father said.)

I brought up the rum I made and used as basis for the egg nog, and whaddayaknow - mum mixed herself a rum an coke and and liked that too. The nutmeg and spices appealed to her tastebuds. Today the old man was driving, so he couldn't have one, but the wooden tumblers that he had made me for christmas were initiated with homemade rum today.

Snarky elder sister and brother still didn't like my stuff, but I put my faith in younger brother and sister tomorrow. They're less wine snobs and more into drinks and flavoured stuff. Great aunt went with a rum and coke to, and got a bottle to bring home.

Reminder to everyone - the longer it ages, the better it gets! Anytime from now to late August/early September is great for making your nog via my recipe (don't know about the others, if they'd 'hold up' together or separate over time, or what, but my posted recipe held up until New Year's Day (when I drank the last of it) and didn't separate or have any issues whatsoever.

I think my recipe was also able to be 'modified' and I wonder what bourbon-barrel-aged egg nog would be like? You'd need to keep it sub 50F I'd think due to all the dairy and eggs, I don't know if the alcohol stabilizes the 'life' of dairy and eggs outside refrigeration. But a big gallon jar of it aging on some toasted oak dominoes would be fine, so especially start it by March if you want to get some oak in there. Other 'adds' would be panela instead of white sugar, maybe a vanilla bean scraped and mixed in, or even caramelize some of the sugar (or panela) going in to give it a real added complexity! Mine could have used more nutmeg if you're a fan of nutmeg, but I was careful because nutmeg can overpower everything else.
