I find the 1/2 planter barrels very easy to work with and extremely flexible and economical. Sure they're used but once cut up and re-toasted they have a huge amount of oaking potential. They come basically used and pre-seasoned.
Stack of 1/2 barrel staves and end that's been sitting outside like this for a couple years. This was a JD barrel but I'd like to get a couple other planter barrels from other types... Very easy to work with and you can fill them with dirt and plants and let them sit around for a couple seasons before taking apart and stacking/drying...
I'm going to clean and toast these two whole. 375 down to 300 over at least a couple hours... Cut em down to size and maybe retoast @ 400 or a couple different second-toast batches for some variety...
These are cleaned up and toasting this morning while I squeeze some mash for the next strip and re-mash..
Used toasted wine fingers for next wine barrel finishing. The wine fingers were toasted at 400F for 6 hours then sat in various wine carboys for 6-9 months... "Now they're fuckin seasoned..."
These are pre-toasting now. I usually do 400F for 6 hours but these are varying 300-375 over a handful of hours. I'll do a deeper retoast once cut up.
Cheers!

Nice work, jonnys_spirit.
Here's my mini-barrels maturing sweet, sweet nectars.
The plastic funnel is not used for alcohol, so don't go there.

That’s an awesome set of barrels Fizzix!
I just filled a 10L one of the same kind w/HBB and now that I’m rolling on the hbb production planning two more 16gallon spirit runs which might necessitate another barrel and cutting a good amount of white hbb.
How do you like what those are doing? How long so far?
Cheers,
Jonny

I'm new and thus cannot relate an educated assessment, Jonny. But I'll try.jonnys_spirit wrote:That’s an awesome set of barrels Fizzix!

The barrels are all 62-65% and within months and days of a year old, and each exhibit the amber depth of commercial liquor.
Diluted samples prove the Booner's is by far the most intriguing, woody sweet flavor.
Booner's is an easy taste with a formidable crave and repeatability. In fact I went back for seconds and thirds and am considering
just emptying and diluting the bastard for tonight.
Based upon my 362-day expansive experience, I'd recommend your best liquor in that 10-liter, and I'll see you here in a year for a report.
