US Patent 4,956,194 Accelerated Aging using... Oak bark?

Post by atarijedi »

Last night I went on a multihour journey across the internet searching for all the research I could find on what happens during aging, and methods of aging, and I came across US Patent 4,956,194.

This is a patent by a man named Burt Gos, for the artificial accelerated aging of spirits. The thing that surprised me is that in it, he details how you can artificially age spirits using Oak bark.

Now as we all know, Oak bark is considered a bit dangerous because of its high level of tannins. In this patent, he describes drying it at under 100F, then pulverizing it into a powder and adding that. He states that while the heartwood contains m-2-gallic acid (which I assume is digallic acid) which is the compound people associate with astringency, the bark is mostly gallic acid (it doesn't bind with proteins on your tongue), which is pleasant tasting.

Has anyone else heard of this being done before? Using Oak bark in the aging process that is? He also uses willow tree bark, since it supposedly has some of the same compounds.

Just wondering if anyone has run this as an experiment before.

Don't know about oak bark but using willow bark could offer a major advantage. Get drunk and then cure the hangover with the salicilin (like aspirin) in the willow.

Wouldn't that be something, being able to drink it without getting a headache the next day.

I think I might put this down in my list of things to experiment with. Both Oak and Willow barks, whole and powdered. Won't be able to test it for a long while though, have lots of other things to try first.

Well, if you make your cuts right and craft your sip proper, that shouldn't be a worry. More practicin to be done!

Nothing gunna "cure" a hangover except more Ethanol......other things only mask/ hide the symptoms.

If your getting a headache your doing it all wrong, need to improve your cuts.
Been a bit tired some days from too little sleep but haven't had a hangover in a loooonnng time.
Took me a while distilling to find that hangover free booze wasn't a myth.

2019-05-02 Application status is Expired - Fee Related
If he's not paying the bills no one is paying him to use it. It's an interesting idea, would need to try it to see if it was worth it or not. The digallic acid link is new to me. I've not know that's part/all cause of astringency.

Also - I believe that if you use something other than a barrel to "age" a product you have to put that on the label - wood chips, staves, etc...

Good cuts is how Ive been hungover free. Screwed up a small fruit batch & it turned into hangover city.

Willow bark.... I remember hearing something about it & indians but cant remember the details. Anyone? On a positive note, I have a bunch of willow trees out in the swamp. Should I add it to something to age?

It's White Willow bark, it contains 19 compounds that work on mild pain, without the risk of at upset stomach but it is also a blood thinner. It's a better choose than aspirin...it reduces swelling and inflammation, without the side affects. It's one of the first herbs to have in your alt-med cabinet, if your a prepper or into homeopathic medicine.
All that fun we had growing up...We pay for as we grow old.
