Whisky Advent Calendar!

Post by MtRainier »

My wife doesn't drink, but approves of the hobby and of my appreciation of good whisky. She got me a Whisky Advent Calendar, imported from England apparently. 1 dram of whisky per day. I'm 6 in so far and they're all different and all great.

By her gift, it's obvious your appreciation for whisky is paralled by your wife's appreciation of you. I had never heard of such a calendar, but its sure to be a nifty way to sample a variety of whiskies from the U.K.
Enjoy them in good health!

She's a keeper for sure.

It's definitely not all Scotch. It's a pretty eclectic selection so far, not even all UK stuff. So far one French one and one US:

1 Lost Distilleries Blend Batch 11
2 Starward New World Malt Whisky
3 Singleton Malt Master's Selection
4 BenRiach 12 year old Sherry Wood
5 Brenne Cuvee Speciale
6 Hudson Baby Bourbon (this one is 100% corn and quick aged in little barrels. I have no idea how they got so much flavor in there, but I sure would be happy if I could make one like this at home in 2 gallon barrels)

MtRainier,
I think I know which calendar you’re talking about, my wife couldn’t find a way to ship it to the states.
However, I did end up with a spirits calendar and am quite pleased with it. :D
The one that you have sounds a like it’s more in line with my personal taste. Hopefully I can figure out a way to get it next year.

Here’s a picture of the one that I have:

If anyone looks at getting this next year, wait for the black Friday deal because it dropped about $20.00 this year.
Here’s a list of what’s inside:
• BSB-Brown Sugar Bourbon x 3
• BSB 103 x 3
• Elk Rider Bourbon x 2
• Elk Rider Rye x 2
• Elk Rider Vodka x 2
• Elk Rider Crisp Gin x 2
• Dual Barrel Old Fashioned Ready Bourbon x 2
• Dual Barrel Old Fashioned Ready Rye x 2
• Coffee Flavored Vodka x 2
• Vanilla Flavored Vodka x 2
• Blood Orange Flavored Vodka x 2

Here’s to 17 more days of drinking!

Cheers
Irish

Heritage Distillery is within several hours of my home. The owner has been very creative in the past by allowing distillery members to come in and make their own 5 gallon barrels of whiskey. They are stored at the distillery and then after 3-6 months you pay for bottling. Each small barrel has the owners name on it.

She ordered from Hard to Find Whisky in England. Arrived in 4 days to east coast US. Marked as decorative glassware, I think. Ships via DHL.

I would love that. I have a few distiller friends. I should ask them how much would make it worthwhile.

4 days? Wow!
I think it took at least four days to get my calender. Thanks for the info MtRainier!
Bushman, If I was close by, I would join the Cask Club in a heartbeat. I'm just outside of Chicago, so I don't think I'll be near Heritage anytime soon.
It's a great idea, I wish some of the local distillery's would pick up on the idea. Indiana just changed some of the distilling laws and we are starting to see a good number of craft distillery's pop up all around. Maybe I can push one of them to start a program like the Cask Club. I could see Koval or Journeymans starting something soon.

Cheers

It’s a great way to build your client base and sell direct. They are set up as a training area with one very large still and 5+ 25 gallon stills that are used mainly on second runs when making gin. With the multiple stills it makes it easier for this type of operation. Also his distillery is used for a training area for other craft distillers.

Wonder if there would be legal issues with my friend selling me a newly filled cask of whiskey to age myself at home.

Seems like if he proofed it accurately at filling and measured the volume going in accurately he could pay the tax and be fine.

His place is small enough that he really needs barrel storage space for his own production so I think that would be his sticking point. Also he just has one combo 400gal jacketed mashtun/fermenter/stripper that he runs once per week, so he’d be out a week of grain runs.

Maybe I should go in with some friends to buy 25gal worth of filled barrels which is maybe what we’d get from one strip of 400g of mash after cuts and we’d go out there for a day of mash in and a long day of strip and spirit runs.

Now that’s an Advent Calendar! 1 gallon of whisky each day plus one left for Christmas morning.

Happy Holidays all!

Wanted to bring this post back to life for the holiday season.

Wife was kind enough to get me / find me the calendar that I wanted last year. (Thanks to MtRainier!)

Hard To Find Whisky – Single Malt Whisky Advent Calendar

First day was FN amazing – (That Boutique-y Whisky Company) - Aultmore 28 Year old Single Malt Batch #13.
Delicious!

I should add that the Heritage calendar I had last year was great, just happy to have zero repeated spirits this year.
Anyone find other calendars? It’d be great to hear about some other options.

Cheers,
Irish

Make sure to keep the reindeer away from your calendar. I hear they like the good stuff.
