Turbo or not to turbo?

Post by UselessPete »

My last wash was a turbo, with sugar. I used the 'amazing stil' which left me with an apple-like taste that i couldnt get rid of, my cogac, whisky, bourban essences all tasted the same!!

I am now looking at using EC-1118 or K1v-1116 for a cleaner finish without all the other nasties, and using a proper pot still. Im not bothered how long it takes to ferment either.

So, I also need advice on what to add to the wash as nutrients, not keen on tomatoes in case it goes over in the still? (ugh!) I hear people using grap juice etc. etc. As this is not a turbo I will need something to get things going.

OR

should i just use a turbo, as in theory it should be clean. Ta!

Most turbos have all the nutrients you need already in them. If using EC-1118 you can add the 6 ounce can of tomato paste and it will not come across in the still....I've done it dozens of times.

One objection against turbo's is the sweet first fraction that comes of the column. Up to 30% of the distillate can contain this sweetness. Anybody know a way to get rid of this or at least make this fraction smaller when fermenting with turbo's?
