I ordered some DAP for a sugar wash, the seller noted that either white or black DAP would be supplied, depending upon his stock.
I received brown/black prills (little balls)
I want to make a colourless wash this time so I decided to purify the DAP by recrystalisation.
When I dissolved the DAP in water I got a lot of sand at the bottom and a thin layer of sticky brown oily stuff on top.
The sand is annoying because it means that there is less DAP than the weight of the prills indicated.
The oil is f***ing maddening as it sticks to anything it touches.
So
Don't buy or use black/brown DAP prills.
Just thought it worth mentioning.

Re: Beware of black DAP
Sounds like someone sold you a “bill of goods”. Di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) is a white crystalline mineral. Whatever “black DAP” is, it obviously isn’t the right suff.

Re: Beware of black DAP
I realise that diammonium phosphate is a colourless salt, (I doubt that it can be found as a mineral)
that is why I wanted to recrystalise the DAP that I received
but if you google "diammonium phosphate" and look at Images you will find
https://www.google.com/search?q=Diammon ... 66&bih=663
obviously an agricultural grade.
(presumably the oil is some sort of slow-release agent)
So I thought that I might save others from the same mistake that I made, by mentioning it.

The dark one in those photos is the version used by farmers on plant crops.
It's hard to disolve and not great for our use.
Can buy 30k bag for about $20.
I bought a bag once thinking it might be good for ferments......ended up using it as lawn fertiliser to get rid of it.

There are several grades available . Its main use is as an agricultural fertilizer. For food grade as used in our world and winemaking it is refined to be a white crystal . Expect to pay more
