I got a couple of these from Kmart (Australia) would they be suitable for aging? The cork stopper is around 3-4” wide and 1” thick, would that evaporate too fast?
I’ve got some red wine barrel offcuts that I’m planning on medium toasting and adding to some rum for aging
i bought a couple before i realised that the cork was not natural.
then i poured boiling water into one and it shattered.
didn't even know what soda glass was until then lol.
got a few 2l & 3l jars with clip lids from kmart, wrapped ptfe tape twice around all the silicone seals.
the flips are soda glass as well, ok for storing low wines etc
i buy my pfte tape in bulk now
Ah didn’t even consider cork type. Looks like it’s lots of little pieces glued together I shoulda known it was too good to be true! Thanks for saving me from wasting a whole batch of rum
I have heaps of those 2 & 3L mason jars already, great for low wines! They were out of stock for a while so when they came back in I loaded up, got some funny looks with a shopping trolley full of jars They also do a cheap 15L SS stockpot which I’ve used loads for mixing and airing low wines
I’ll go the PTFE mason jar combo for now I reckon.
kitchen warehouse do a 5l flip jar, but it was about $24 IIRC
but i can get nearly 6 x 3l from kmart for that price.
i also decided that i was going to try aging, with the different dominoes i have got, in the 2l or 3l jars until i find the taste i like.
<looks at bruised finger>those clips can get pretty snappy with 2 layers of ptfe added
Don't buy any glassware that comes with a problem you don't already have a solution for. Natural cork can be expensive and hard to find. I found a supplier for a common size of demijohn available in NZ, but it wasn't easy and there is no guarantee he will still have them next time I ask. If you find a source, buy more than you need.
I use 2.5 qt glass pickle jars, after I eat the pickles. Usually cost less than $4 pickles included.
I found $1 stainless bowls at the dollar store to act as a loose lid when inverted. The angels get a share if the lid goes ajar, but other than that it works pretty good for blending or a few months on oak sticks.
