Sugar cane nectar?

Post by Sailman »

Stopped by a Brazilian bakery and cafe this morning and they sell sugar cane nectar. I'm assuming that this is something that you drink. A quick search online brought up several different products called sugar cane nectar one being a beverage and another being a plant supplement. Does anybody have any experience with this? they had it on their menu for $12 a gallon and if the sugar content is where you needed it may be a good for making rum.

There is a beverage shop we frequent that sells sugar cane juices, slushies and smoothies. The sugar cane juice drink comes from fresh-pressed cane and no water is added, just flavorings. Not sure if they refer to it as nectar, though, just juice.

I think $12/gal is excellent. Would love to hear what a hydrometer reading tells you.

You can make rum straight from juice, but it wouldn't be cheap rum at that price. Measure the SG or the Brix.

It's also sold by the glass, I'll have to get some and see.

Measure the SG or Brix. Taste it. If you think it will make nice rum, try to find a cheaper source for bulk juice, then read up on how to make rum and Cachaça from it.

I picked up 5G of fresh cooked sugar cane syrup for $25 a gallon from a farmer a couple years ago. Made a rum with it and also added some molasses & panela. Its 18 months into a 36 month solera aging cycle right now. $12 a gallon for plain juice seems expensive to me compared to the syrup which takes 7 to 10 gallons of juice to make. But hey, if you have deeeep pockets, go for it. 😎
