Hi guys
Was recently given a hand lever barrel pump which I am hoping I can use for racking off and transferring my washes and mashes into either secondary or straight to still, as far as I'm aware it is aluminium which is also coated in zinc and chrome with internal brass fittings, would this be safe to use??

Gosh ,It’s a metallic mongrel for sure .
If were mine , I’d use it for pumping wash .
Low abv in contact with it for a short time .
My risk assessment . You or others might think different .

Well they are designed for lubricants, chemicals, certain acids, I think personally it should be fine. I think if I give it a good rinse after each use we'll be good to go!

Point being you don't pour any of those things down your pie hole do you. proceed with caution.

Re: Hand lever barrel pump
Do you have any pics or product info?
I had a little pump that you hook up to a drill and some garden hose - it had internal lubricant leaks. It was cheap but I don't use it for anything going into my still.
I use a vacuum pump to transfer into carboys and for wash straight into the still boiler I've used a small pond circulation pump that I use for my condenser water.
Cheers!

Zinc chromate (galvanized) will be “attacked” by acids and is toxic. I wouldn’t want my wash run through it, or more directly, I wouldn’t drink anything that I pumped through it.
