Heading to Houston
Evening all,
I find myself headed to Houston next week, so I have a couple of questions for you fine folks.....
1. What are some most do's while there, or hidden gems? And,
2. Anything distilling fabrication related that I should pick up that I can't get back here in Canada?.Flux for stainless soldering, etc?
Cheers,
Dunluce.

Re: Heading to Houston
What to do depends on who is going, business or pleasure and what you/she likes. To me it also depends on how much actual free time you have. Not much free time, I wouldn’t pack in too much. It just becomes a blur. However go to”s
NASA space center has a museum
Museum of fine arts-excellent
Buffalo Bayou Park for strolling and people watching plus they have a very cool underground cistern tour

If in doubt leave it out.

Re: Heading to Houston
You just missed the rodeo and mardi-gras, the museum district is a good destination, if your into fishing and have the coin for it, hire a fishing guide, the bays are about to be full of action. Of corse there are world class restaurants but try some tex-mex while your here! As far as supplies go find a Moore or Fergusons plumbing supply, there are a few scattered around town.
And be aware of your surroundings AT ALL TIMES!
Thats the most important bit of advice I'll give ya, walk swiftly and keep an aggravated look on your face and you'll be o.k!

Not exactly Houston, but Raileans is worth a stop. Mostly rum, but also some tequila and if she has any left an aged whiskey. Down to two cases when we were there last week. If you like the outdoors and alligators, brezos bend park.

Thanks all, looking to stay pretty close to the center of town, not planning to rent a vehicle at this point. Space Center was definitely on my list of things to do, fishing would be great if I could swing it.
Moore or Ferguson's eh? Will definitely have to look into that, as I have a CCVM build in mind. Looking to convert a keg to a boiler so some shopping might be in order.

If you have trouble finding Harris products in Canada try a welding supply store. I got Staybrite, Staybrite8 at one. I had to go to the HVAC supply to get Stayclean liquid flux. Phone ahead to save some Uber money.

Copper is SUPER expensive right now, I'm in the process of a 2 inch build, luckily, I'm a plumber and can take some old but not used fittings we have

If your only
staying around downtown, might as well check out the Aquarium, there's a few small breweries you can go check out, 8th wonder comes to mind, St. Arnolds is a cool brewery and really good beer. I have eaten a lot of lunches at Central Texas style bbq. I was a plumber with the union building the downtown Marriott, it's got a really cool Texas shaped "lazy river" and pool on the roof of the 6th floor, nice place to stay and its right across the street from Minute Maid park if you like baseball, the astros might be playing

Re: Heading to Houston
Well, I might just look at renting a car after all, although I've heard rumours of gas shortages....any truth to that?
I'll be at the George Brown Convention Center and nearby Club Quarters Hotel. I'll be sure to try and find a nice brewery.

In Australia atm, as much as (around) $2.10 Australian a litre.
Maybe $1.60 USD I think.
Election coming up, the (current) government are promising a reduction in fuel tax (even before the election I think).
Will help a bit.

Re: Heading to Houston
Dunluce if you are thinking of a build buy your copper fittings down there and take/ship home. Price difference is scary even after factoring in exchange and duty. Was pricing out a few bits on the weekend and almost got sick at the difference CAD to USD for same pieces.

Definitely something in going to look at. I have a keg boiler to build and a CCVM to put on top of it. Ferrules, copper, ss corrugated gas. Pipe for a condenser possibly....list goes on and on.NorthWoodsAb wrote: ↑Mon Mar 28, 2022 7:08 pm Dunluce if you are thinking of a build buy your copper fittings down there and take/ship home. Re: Heading to Houston
For alcohol related places... Buffalo Bayou brewing, 8th Wonder, St Arnolds brewery, Yellow Rose Distilling, Whitmeyer's, and Gulf Coast Distillers. The museum district is nice, as is Nasa (It's quite the drive from downtown) and there are plenty of strip clubs. On a more serious note, as a local Houstonian, don't wander too far east or north from the George R Brown Area on foot. Like many other cities in the US we have had surging crime in the city areas. Be cautious and aware of your surroundings. Additionally, Houston is a Big City, I'd recommend a car rental or Uber/Lift if going anywhere outside of the core downtown area you will be in. We are the energy capital of the world, there is no gas shortage here.
