Curious how many of you whisky producing folks on here use a thumper vs. double distill pot still head only vs. ????
Whatcha all running to produce your favorite most flavourful whiskies? I do double pot still head and debating on if I should build me a thumper or not and if it will make my honey bear bourbon even better.
I recently read long thread on here about that subject. last year runs were stripped pot only and spirit run with thumper. thread was a member did 3 separate test I believe
1 strip no thump, spirit thump both slow
2 strip with thump, spirit with thump both slow.
3. strip no thump hard and fast, spirit slow with thump.
I may not have that exactly right, but I do remember he liked the slow and with thump on both stripping and spirit. I'm duplicating that right now.
Do my whisky on a 4 plate bubbler. Could probably drop back to 3 plates if I wanted more flavour but I do tend to prefer a cleaner whisky.
Before the bubbler I always just double pot distilled and got fairly good results (granted mostly all sugarhead batches). Heck on my first all grain attempt I just did one very slow single pot still run and it was rubbish off the still. Didn't collect enough to make it worthwhile even running again and my mashing setup was very primitive then so I couldn't be arsed doing another mash. Turns out after a few months on oak and some forced aging (hot/cold applications) it is now very drinkable.
I've never ran a thumper before, so can't comment there.
It is easier to fool someone than it is to convince them that they have been fooled.
Been using a thumper equal in size to my boiler for years . Doubles what I can strip fast and dirty . Then I do a spirit run . Run AG now and would not change the way I run .
If you ain't the lead dog in the team , the scenery never changes . Ga Flatwoods made my avatar and I want to thank him for that .
Don't drink water , fish fornicate in it .
If you have a thumper, use it.
A thumper isn't only limited to one run and done shine.
It's also great for stripping runs to get enough low-wines for a packed column neutral spirit run.
Long story short, a thumper is a tool with more than one possible use.
I have been thinking about building a thumper for two cases. One would be so I didn't have to squeeze grain, put the cleared liquid in the boiler, the grains in the thumper and strip it all. My second is similar only for apples, be able to put the apple solids on the thumper. Not sure if that should be ran slow for one and done to try and save all the possible flavor or as a strip/spirit combo?
