Aluminum 16 oz bottles can they be used for short storage?

Post by Blackgrub79 »

So have a few twist top aluminum 16 oz bottles and wanted to know what you all think or know about using them for short-term storage of a strip run? I ask because I'm going to have about 15 of them on hand and wanted to see if they could be used for anything else. Thank my guess is no but wanted to ask anyway.

Unless the acidity of your low wines is high (low pH) I don't see any reason not to. Except possibly for whatever sealing material is in the lids.

I can't find a reference for the seal without contacting the manufacturer, but I would look to see if I could get 38mm natural conical corks.

Or just cover them with aluminium foil held in place with an elastic band. It's only short term right?

Don't do it. They coat the inside of them

Missed that. Assumed that aluminium would be aluminium.

Why not get an old sanke keg.. or Corny keg. The sanke with spear removed and a cap is great for storage. A corney keg you need to replace the reals with PTFT but then it works well.

glass gallon jugs or carboys also work

I only use glass or stainless steel for storage. I go to local junk shops, rummage stores and get 1 gal glass jugs real cheap. I get extra select corks from Widgetco. Glass carboys are handy so I pick them up when I find good deals on used ones.

Someone recommended going to a local recycling center and supposedly they'll let you get glass jugs for free. I never tried that. Supposedly local bars will give you empty 1 gal glass wine jugs too.

I’ve got a couple of big lids from Widgetco. They’re frikkin sweet. The layers on them have always given me a little concern as they are sure to have some kind of adhesive though.

Many posts listed under composite/or agglomerated cork. Food for thought.

Well shit…..I figured I’d bump the thread on a wing and a prayer. :shh:

I haven't heard of those, but I searched them on their site. They say their jar corks come in two categories, 'Jar Corks, Agglomerated' and 'Jar Corks, Standard'. Agglomerated are composite while their Jar Corks are natural, whole cork. I think the natural corks should be fine. I don't think I'd use the Agglomerated/composite lids. Those lids appear to cost more than what I pay for 1 gal glass jugs and corks to match.
