I bought a used 20L keg off ebay that was listed as good for storage of wine, etc. I went to pick it up a few minutes ago and recieved it in a dark parking lot, so i couldnt inspect it. When i asked what was in it, he just said "some sort of food ingredient". Once i got home, i looked at the label on the side and it lists the previous contents as 99% acetaldehyde. How should i go about cleaning this thing? I know acetaldehyde is miscible in water, and being one of the things that we make during a run Im not hugely concerned. Would a rinse out followed by a soak in hot soapy water followed by vigorous rinsing be enough? I was planning on using this for storage of low wines.
I read the MSDS, and besides an apparently very high risk of spontaneois explosion when exposed to air (!!), it seems cleanable....
Thanks

Re: Keg of 99% Acetaldehyde
So, Update on the impromptu hazardous waste disposal situation. After reading that acetaldehyde vapors can spontaneously explode when exposed to air and that containers are supposed to be purged with nitrogen when resealed and then stored in an explosion proof refrigerator, I didn't feel too comfortable with a nearly empty keg of the stuff sitting on the table in front of me. I briskly took it outside being careful not to shake it too much (MSDS didn't say anything about shaking, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to treat it gently...) set it in the yard and got out the hose. I removed the cap and shoved the hose in and went back inside while it filled up. I could smell it from more than 30 ft away, very fruity! After it was overflowing, I just let it rinse for a while. I dumped it out and did a quick sniff of the insides - no smell, so seems pretty clean. Im sure I wasn't in as much danger of explosion as the MSDS made it seem, but Ill choose to believe it because it makes the story more fun and exciting. Gonna give it a hot soapy bath now.
Bonus! - The cap has what appears to be a teflon seal!

Man , I think you are good to go .
I work in a Lab and deal with that sort of SDS disposals and safety info .
Not trying to dumb down SDS's , but they are mostly written for huge amounts of product ... Read warehouse amounts .. and are basically precautionary advice when it comes to small amounts ... Read a kilo or so .
HD forum disclaimer .... This Is my personal opinion on the matter .
