Houston we have a problem
I have always had an acute sense of smell. Our furnace cracked one time and I could smell the exhaust gasses in the house. Utility company arrived pronto and could only detect 1ppm Carbon monoxide. Sewer line broke under a concrete floor. The smell drove me crazy. No one else could smell it. Took some arguments to jackhammer up the floor to find a 2” gray water line had cracked and needed repair. Etc etc etc.
Tested positive for COVID last Tuesday. Pushing through the symptoms. Not a big deal just a real loss of energy, cough. The usual.
Feeling a little better so was selecting oak to add to some fresh corn whisky yesterday based upon how the oak smells. That’s just how I’ve done it. Always worked. French oak, American oak, previously used for Bourbon or Rum.
I can’t smell a damn thing! Not even onions, garlic, anchovies. Nothing. I have blunted taste right now but no sense of smell. Trying to smell a spirit all I get is the alcohol burn if I really huff it in.
The still is loaded for a spirit run of corn, golden graham malted barley and chocolate malted barley. I can’t even smell the low wines in the still. I can detect the presence of alcohol but nothing else. Strip run was on a pot still hard and fast. There were all kinds of smells. I get nothing.
Making cuts just became a problem…
Hope this doesn’t last to long.

Hey Dan.. welcome to the new world order of creating problems for us people, as if we didn't have enough of their control..
Sorry on your last of smell, it will be a pain in the ass at making cut.. maybe wise to put it off and see if your smell does come back to normal..

Your body uses up a lot of zinc to fight off that kind of virus. Loss of taste and smell is a symptom of low zinc.
Try eating foods with a lot of zinc to get your zinc level back up.
Oysters are very high in zinc.
Red meat is pretty good too.

+1 on the zinc. My sister had loss of taste and smell and took a zinc supplement. She has her smell back and taste is probably 85% according to her.

Things are on hold for sure. There are not many things that taste "bad" to me so to use taste alone for cuts will be pretty weird.StillerBoy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 23, 2022 9:43 am Hey Dan.. welcome to the new world order of creating problems for us people, as if we didn't have enough of their control..

When I got it, I lost my sense of smell and taste. I was in the same boat. I had a run of HBB lows ready to run and with my head literally in the stock pot nearly full of funky low wines, I couldnt smell a damn thing. I had to put it off for two weeks. My sense of taste took about the same.
I also had the head fog really bad, and that lasted several weeks. I still have not found my wedding ring that I lost as a result.

My grandma lost her sense of taste and smell for around 6 months. I completely lost mine. It was a bizarre experience. Literally could not smell or taste anything. Fortunately it was only 8 days for me before it started coming back. Hopefully your senses come back sooner then later as well!

Tell me about it. It wasn't just a simple band either. It was a substantial amount of gold with a 1/3 carat diamond setting. Ive torn the house apart looking for it. I never take it off anywhere but at the kitchen sink, where it sits on the windowsill, or at my toolbox in the garage where it goes in a metal tray. It can't go down the drain of the sink, it's not anywhere in my toolbox. I even took the seats out of my truck in hopes it fell under the seat somehow. I can't for the life of me figure out where it might be. It wasn't a lose fitting ring either. My wife is still pissed.Stonecutter wrote: ↑Sun Oct 23, 2022 11:29 amYour wedding ring? It’ll turn up. Gut wrenching for sure. That’s one of the of the reasons I don’t even wear a ring.

Yep. Went through this right back at the start of the crisis. I was lucky that it came back after a few days but it really freaked me out and it was a while before I had any faith in what I was smelling. It's still by far the weirdest symptom of covid.
Hope it clears up soon. I would definitely delay your run for a few days. Keep a vial of mint / lavender essential oil to hand if you want an early sign of its return.

That’s funny about the burned smell. My wife lost her sense of smell but complain that she smells someone cooking!Old Dog New Tricks wrote: ↑Sun Oct 23, 2022 4:05 pm Sorry for that loss,

That's brutal Dan hope it's temporary. I lost my sense of smell in 87 after chlorine gas exposure. It's a real handicap at times. Sometimes get faint whiffs of something but not sure if it's real or not.
A close buddy experienced the same thing as you after vid, took a couple months to get back to normal.
Cheers man.

Re: Houston we have a problem
i've not officially had covid. but completely lost sense of smell for about 2.5 weeks.
all tests negative throughout, very odd.
maybe i have to put it down to 4 x covid shots?
anyway, i now sympathize with anyone suffering from this, it made doing cuts very difficult

My sense of smell is coming back and was good enough to do a spirit run. Used 250ml jars and will let it all sit for a week or so before I choose the cuts.
Hoping it gets better with some time.
