Note that you are not changing any part of your original brew - you're not "making" the alcohol, or converting it to something else or nasty. All you are doing is concentrating off the original brew into its various parts. There is no more methanol after you finish than what you started with. What does happen though, is that because most of the methanol comes off at once (first up), it is highly concentrated, and can damage you. You definitely don't want to be sampling the first portion of distillate that you collect. But once you have thrown away this part, you have guaranteed that the remaining [[distillate]] is safe enough to partake of.

Editing the Theory page
I am not sure I like this paragraph. Haven't we shown that most methanol comes off in the tails? Also, isn't it true that any mash has very little methanol to begin with? We aren't making wood alcohol here. And yes, I agree that we toss the foreshots because they are nasty and we don't want to recycle them and risk concentrating the nastiness.

Re: Editing the Theory page
This is why we need more competent wiki editors. This is from the Theory page, brought over from the original site Tony did 25 or so years ago. I'm crawling through it trying to fix grammar and punctuation and attempting to make it more accurate, but it's a pretty large task.
I'd rather have a group of us go through it and modify it by consensus to make it what it should be.

Is that link supposed to bring this up U.J. or something else ? Not that it really matters , the Return to main page at the bottom does just that.

Would it be helpful to start a thread where members could make suggestions about what needs changing ....what needs adding or deleting ...that sort of thing.......or is that just likely to turn into a bun fight.

Re: Editing the Theory page
Perhaps follow the wikipedia model and hold those conversations on the relevant Talk pages. I don't know if it's possible to set up the permissions for this, but perhaps universal (or near-universal) write access to the talk pages with write-access to the actual wiki pages being limited to a set of editors who can pick and choose from the results of the talk pages.
But that will also limit the input to those who can be bothered to learn at least a minimum amount of wiki-fu. I don't know if that's a net-positive or net-negative side-effect.

I like the idea other than giving random spammers the chance to edit talk pages. Perhaps I can limit it to registered users.NormandieStill wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 5:06 am Perhaps follow the wikipedia model and hold those conversations on the relevant Talk pages. Re: Editing the Theory page
I'm not for this for most topics. Only the wiki editors are going to pay any attention to the talk pages. For our purposes it would better serve us if we have any questions/issues that we post in this forum so more users will see. If we have questions on specific entries I would prefer share the question with the group. We know there aren't many editors so it's better to "crowdsource" answers.NormandieStill wrote: ↑Tue Nov 22, 2022 5:06 amPerhaps follow the wikipedia model and hold those conversations on the relevant Talk pages.
