A very pretty idea for a dephlegmator

Post by tiramisu »

I saw this on one of the facebook groups today and thought it was very pretty
and might even be practical for a 2" dephleg.

Very pretty! However, not nearly as much surface area for vapors to condense on.

I've seen other old builds with this system, I don't know if it's efficient....only the outer wall is cooled, even if it's a dephlegmator I think it would be difficult to manage from a water/cooling point

Efficient enough to create some reflux and get the plates loaded.....yes ........efficient enough to work as a true dephlegmator and separate the lower boiling point compounds of the wash from the less volatile components of the wash?........hmmmm I'm not so sure about that.

May look prettttty enough, but save your time and efforts on buying or building one..

Does it work.. sure it does, but has no meaningful refluxing ability...

The design has a very poor refluxing ability due to its low cooling contact with rising vapor..

I build one awhile back just to see how well it worked.
It was a lot better than I thought it would.
Its biggest down fall was all the reflux ran down on the side of the packing.

ATTENTION SO CALLED EXPERTS- I actually own one of these. Guess what? It works great. Did it raise the proof of my spirit? YES Does it create reflux? YES Is it easy to use? YES, easy to use. Does the spirit have a "cleaner" taste? YES Am I glad I own one? HELL YES.

How many of you "experts" have actually owned one? Listen to the crickets....that's what I thought.

Not the case in actual practice. It is easy to control

Tom Kat no one said it wouldn’t create reflux. I saw a few comments questioning the limits of such a device and Shady even gave it some props. If you’re happy with your purchase that’s awesome man. Is it glitzy? YES!
Are there better reflux systems/devices out there? YES!

I wish obtaining 95% was like taking a piss. I’d have saved myself a ton of time and money. I hear (from the experts) once you dial in a CCVM it can be pretty damn easy.

Tom Kat maybe you want to post up your rig and explain to us what exactly it is you are trying to accomplish with that CM jacket.

Perceived controllability/efficiency issues aside, it mirrors the wow-factor of your 48" long liebig perfectly. Keep on distillin'!

The title is very misleading base on the picture posted.. it's at best a water cool jacket condenser.. and based on the video, it is setup on a pot still configuration not a reflux column..

As to a real dephlegmator, it has the ability to stop vapors from proceeding further up, called " refluxing", and also the ability to allow a certain amount of vapors pass.. the picture of the apparatus certain will not allow both of those functions..

Will it reflux.. some passive reflux by the small amount of vapor contacting with the cooled wall surface.. but it certainly does not provide meaningful refluxing..

Marketer's will design things that a novice is dupe into misleading info and product, and the marketer profits..

Correct all of the way, Stillerboy.
It is only a jacket condenser, and not a well designed one at that, a simple jacket over the inner pipe instead of the coiled tube arrangement would provide more efficient cooling.
To call it a true dephlegmator is stretching the truth I would say.......any vapours passing up a centre tube of that size are unlikely to be cooled enough for it to work properly at turning back heavier components of the vapour while still, letting the lighter / lower boiling point components to continue their journey.
Having said that.......no one has yet shown a photo of the inside of the inner tube.....maybe there is something more inside that we are unaware of at this point?
For those who don't know the job of a true dephlegmator.....here is a link.

I disagree.
The design can knockdown all the power a 2" column can handle.
It's flaw, is the reflux drains down the side of the packing instead of being centered.
An other problem is it needs to be longer than all the other options.

There is no mention of packing Shady, I don't think there is any, that in turn wont help its performance as a dephlegmator or as a reflux condencer.

Review the video..

It's setup on a pot still, with an onion.. even it packing was used, it is still passive reflux..

I looked at the video again.
He did say it was a doubling run at 170 proof
He didn't say anything about packing or if there was a plate inside the T with a glass.
I'm assuming there was, otherwise a dephlegmator would be a waste of time.

You need to review the video yourself, before talking about passive reflux only.
It's obvious you don't have any experience with that style of dephlegmator. :sarcasm:

Who's that?
He is an industry luminary.

Alan would also like to experiment with a chamber still, also a less than optimally efficient system.

Does the condenser work as built? Sure it does. So does a cooling lintel.
So does Henry's Gatling Gun Column.
Are any of the above mentioned devices optimally efficient?
Nope.
Can an operator make good alcohol with any of the above mentioned? Surely.
Can the above mentioned make vodka? Not without gobbling up an inordinate amount of resources.

Plenty of experts in their own right here TK. Polished work ain't the same as optimally engineered. And optimally engineered isn't needed when making a flavored spirit.

170 proof is 85% just a few point off a regular pot run, and it's be run at low power which a pot will do..

That contraption is referred to as a dephlegmator it's a contraption to dupe novice who have no knowledge..

Shewt, a water bucket with a half dozen wash rags ready to drape across the top of that expansion chamber would git you dern close to what that externality wrapped coil can achieve.
My point being, an even lesser degree of engineering can get the job done.
Folks around here figured stuff like this out years ago.
That's why its getting scrutinized rather than the ,,,,,"oh my gawd,,,,that's so amazing." response. The " oh my gawd that so amazing " response to that design is the content found on reddit or the Facebook group.

That build (though seems well executed) is inferior technology. Mind you, I say that knowing that exploiting inefficiencies makes for good flavored spirits.
But the reality is that a builder that is not a lazy builder will settle on building a proper dephlegmator rather than taking the easy way out. The single shell and tube design by the way is indeed a proper design. After all that is the design that started it all. The " shotgun " design simply takes efficiency to the next level.

Sums it up nicely Larry, there is a whole world of new distillers out there that are going to think its the best thing since sliced bread.
Its kinda fun from time to time to look at some of the pages that you mention and to see what people think is cool.......mostly they seem to have no idea that most of the better ideas and recipes that they are using started here on this forum. Then you get the wierd n wonderful crazy stuff

Yeah all the new Vevor ( or what ever the phuk its called) posts are a legit indicator that there is some catching up to do for some of the newbs. That technology is easily outdated by no less than 10 years by now.
