I have seen something similar on a documentary about Scottish distilleries. Local community close to one of the distilleries has same issue.

Wow, I'm not far from there and nothing on the local news. Here's a clip from a station in Alabama though.. sounds nasty.

Since I'm not very polite I'll say that news woman is doing her part to deprive JD of all the corn she can consume.

I've seen barn roofs turn black from having a still used inside it.
I figure revenuers knew about black mold and more than one moonshiner got busted because of it.
Mousie's been dead for several years now, but the oak trees on his property still have black mold growing on the bark.

This is the equivalent to moving in next to a pig farm then complaining of the smell. No where in the science documentation cited does it call it black mold.

I feel for the residents, that’s some gross stuff.

If the residents get that place shut down, distilleries will need to buy an extra square mile in every direction of future barrel houses. I’m sure nothing will happen though. The local government is just fine collecting cash from JD.

I suppose one way to mitigate this issue would be a giant reflux column that sits on top of a sealed warehouse. You could just blast a huge fan up the column and chill it with a refrigerated coil. They might even be able to capture the angels share to be further refined into neutral spirit.

Hmmm, I opened a jar i had apple brandy in and there was what looked like black mold on the inside of the lid. I couldn't figure out how any looking like mold could possibly grow inside that jar of high proof. Well, apparently I was wrong..?

Most of the surfaces in my shed where there is aging liquor are dry, too dry to support mold. There are a few places where refrigeration causes moisture to collect and they attract black mold quite quickly, I cleaned one a month ago while it was turned off and have only turned it on again recently.

I just checked an old refrigerator, that has had rum aging in it for several years at tropical temperatures, and it has black dust on all of its horizontal surfaces.

It’s kinda made me a bit nervous as I’m moving to a new place and don’t want the mould to follow .

But after being at Bundaburg Rum distillery lately and seeing black mould everywhere , I’m a bit worried .

I feel for the residents, but it’s simple, huge tax dollars and re-election. Those local boards and councils aren’t getting their fingers dirty on this. They will push plenty of paper, spend a million or two “investigating” and simply bury it.
If in doubt leave it out.

I live in Frankfort Kentucky. And there are several distillery's here. And all the house's around the distillery are coated with a black mold. Just part of it. Buffalo Trace Jim Beam Four Roses are just a few here. And Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve in the next county over. People here are just used to it.

Not a new issue. It’s been know for years that there are molds that thrive on alcohol and they are common in the south around barrel houses.

So how does one go about preventing this? I distill in the basement (electric) and really don't want my house filled with it. I do use an exhaust fan is that enough? and age in my detached garage.

I doubt it's a problem from the short periods we are distilling.

Angels Share might only be a consequence of aging in barrels. If a rick house smells nice, what is being lost? Crap, or good whiskey? Is there any science to show that the amount of Angels Share actually does improve the flavor, or is it just marketing hype from the manufacturers and distributors?

My shed is airy and most of my product is aging in glass with corks that are not over-tightened. There is only black mold on surfaces that are prone to condensation.

I don't age anything in the house.

Don' worry, black mold is kinda greasy and washes off with soapy water.
Once you clean up the mold, make sure to sacrifice some of your finest booze.
So, leprechauns don't get pissed off and cause all sorts of mayhem.

A few years back, a major distiller made that mistake.
The leprechauns got their share, when lightning struck the barrel house and burned it down.
