Proofing Scale?
Is there a formula for how much water to add to say 1 quart of 120 proof to bring it down to 100 or an amount per 10 points or is it a sliding scale? My first whiskey run yielded 3 1/2 quarts at 120 after cuts and blending which will go in a barrel as per bourbon rules.

Re: Proofing Scale?
There are many dilution calculators on line and on this forum .
But this is the calculation
But this is the calculation
My recommended goto .

Re: Proofing Scale?

But to make it more confusing
1000ml of 60abv plus 208ml of H2O makes 1200ml of 50abv

Re: Proofing Scale?
So 120/100 = 1.20 x 32 = 38.4 -32 = 6.4 ozs per quart, thanks, that's what I was looking for.

Re: Proofing Scale?
That calculation doesn't allow for contraction.
The correct answer is to make it up to 1025.64, which takes more than 25.64.
Someone did post a link to downloadable calculator that allowed for contraction not too long ago, but last time I looked for it, I failed to find it. Maybe someone with better search skills can find it?

Re: Proofing Scale?
Jeez that's confused me Chris, if you add water to 1000ml of 60abv to a total volume 1200ml haven't you added 208ml of water and taken contraction into account

I'm just looking to get within a point or two in either direction, mt palate isn't scientifically preciseNZChris wrote: ↑Sat Mar 25, 2023 12:02 am That calculation doesn't allow for contraction.

Re: Proofing Scale?
What is confusing about that?
What confuses people is when they calculate to add 200ml to 1000ml, check the results and discover that they have less than 1200ml and the ABV is higher than the target.

Re: Proofing Scale?
i think online calculators are fine at hobby level for small volumes.
but a dilution calculator will say - to dilute 1000l of 80%abv to 40%abv, add 1000l water for 2000l of 40%abv, which will not be correct.
if you're keen on maths, there is a 'simple' mass dilution equation using a large table involving mass/vol/density.
the only app i've stumbled across is the Alcodens, which is not free, but mainly for pro's.
the best analogy i've come across to explain dilution is.....
if you put 10l of sand into a bucket and add 10l of water, have you got 20l?
ethanol molecules are smaller than water molecules and fall in between similarly.
