Multiple barreling vs blending

Post by wv_hillbilly »

I’ve come to a post where I’m looking to take the next step in making more complex whiskey. I’m looking to really dive deeper into what wood is going to bring to the picture. I’m starting to play around with aging on different types of wood, and blending different single wood aged whiskies. Does anybody have any experience in these areas? I know it will end up coming down to personal preference, but I’m curious if there is a “better” or preferred method.

Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

I think where you are headed is an endlessly deep rabbit hole, but very worth exploring.
I've experimented in a similar way using Rum all from the same run/ batch.......its been oaking in glass now for about 4 years........all are quite different to my taste after this amount of time.
I don't think it's something you can learn about without plenty of time.
There is also quite a bit written that says as much as 80% of a spirits flavour can come from the wood......so yes it's worth experimenting.

Keep a look out for OtisT. Yinzer linked a very nice article as well a few years back.

I’ve been wood aging stuff for almost 10 years now. But I’ve never experimented with blending or multiple wood aging. So I think I have a pretty good solid base of the flavor profiles to begin with. And I know where I’d like to end up. It’s kind of finding the route there that’s in question. I know both will get me there. But is one faster? One smoother? One overall preferred? Those types of questions.

To get a preview of what a different wood has to offer, I use trickery borrowed from here.

That was a really good, lengthy read. The engineer in me appreciates the data contained within. Sounds like it’s time to do a new build. Have you started any new trials since? I need to read up some more on wood degradation by UV.

I don’t know shit about aging. Looking forward to seeing how this thread progresses. Maybe I’ll learn something other than how to be an A-S-S  …probably not
