Finally upgraded to a keg!
I moved from fermenting in 6-6 gallon buckets to 15 gallon coolers. I’m sure you can guess what happened next. It will probably come as a surprise to absolutely nobody that an 8 gallon Vevor still will not hold and distill 8 gallons. Add to that the fact that my homemade gasket decided to develop a little leak, and I had a mess on my hands. Nothing a quick removal of some beer and a little flour paste couldn’t fix, but still not ideal.
So, the time has come. Thanks to a couple very generous durum members, I have a keg on hand which already has a triclamp ferrule for an element. So, I built this contraption: For anyone keeping track, that’s 2” on the keg, up to 3”, back down to 1.5”, and then a tee with a thermometer on top and my trusty leibig on the side. Let me explain..
First of all, this was a cleaning run. I don’t know if the keg needs the full treatment or not (it was previously used for gin, but I don’t know how long or how it has been stored, so might as well). It was also my first attempt at setting this whole rig up, and I learned a bit, including the need for more convenient plumbing. Since I’m going to do the whole cleaning thing anyway, I might as well clean a couple pieces that I’ve bade and never used.
On top of the keg is a 2”-3” adapter from Amazon. On top of that is a 3”-1.5” adapter which I built out of a couple ferrules and a song drain plug. Next comes a tee, which I built out of a 1.25” copper tee and 1.5” ferrules, using some thin stainless sleeves cut out of a drain pipe from a sink. Yes, I know there’s a better way. But I had to learn the hard way, and it finally works, so there it is. Next comes the thermometer. Just an off the shelf adapter with the thermometer that came with the Vevor way back when. I didn’t really need it, but I needed a cap anyway, so why not?
According to my fancy new meter on the controller, I’m running about 5800 Watts at full power. The leibig had no trouble knocking that down, although the “product” was coming out pretty warm. So while there were a few learning experiences (including my son learning not to touch something when daddy tells him it’s hot), overall it was a very successful experience. Now I need to get the sacrificial run done and put her to work.

Sweet keg ! ! ! Congratulations. I think you'll like doing larger runs. You'll also appreciate any modifications made to the keg. I remember when I had to carry the keg around. Rolling it around on wheels is just soooooo nice.

Nice looking contraption.

Re: Finally upgraded to a keg!
Sweet upgrade man, you'll soon feel the benefits of being able to strip so much better.
Next upgrade I see coming is a 3" sight glass after the adapter, so that you see a puke happening before it gets up the riser.
It will happen, I promise!
Nice work on the Liebig too, it's prettier than mine. If your hot product starts to become an issue, try differing the angle for a small increase in efficiency, the closer to horizontal I run mine, the less water it needs.

Re: Finally upgraded to a keg!
I have a 1.5” sight glass which I use for exactly that purpose. I’m sure I’ll be investing in a 2” before long, but I’ve got other stuff to finish up before I need that.
For the record, that hodgepodge collection of adapters isn’t something I plan on running for any practical purpose. I just put that together to clean everything at once. For the moment, the adapters are just going in the box of parts until I get around d to building something that needs them.
Thanks! It’s pretty much standard, except that I opted to flare the vapor tube to fit the water jacket on the inlet side, and took a lot of time to fit the water inlet and outlet fittings so that they fit the tees neatly. None of which makes it function any better, but I like how it looks.
Interesting advice on the position of the leibig. I had no idea that the angle could make that much difference. I have noticed that it’s more prone to huffing when horizontal vs vertical. In any case, I don’t think the temperature will be too much of an issue. This was full tilt on a vinegar run. I’m guessing it’ll do a slightly better job on alcohol, and the only time I’d run that hard is a stripping run anyway.

Congratulations on your new keg man. Moving up to a keg from a small boiler was the best thing I did. Makes a lot more product at a time and makes cuts easier with the larger volume. You're gonna love it man. Well done sir.

Congratulations on the upgrade. You will enjoy the keg. I too went from a 5 gal. Vevor to a keg, it has been great.

Re: Finally upgraded to a keg!
That’s my plan. At 8 gallons nominal, it’s a good size for a lot of things, and it can fit the same heating element as the keg. I may end up using it as a thumper or a steam generator as well.

Nice setup, I started with a keg, still use the same one. I've done essential oils through it to, stunk the hell out of the still but keg was fine. They seem to be good stainless, must be 316 gear I reckon.
Here's to alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all life's problems.

First run of the keg for something I’ll actually drink! I’m stripping a sugarhead from my Stillhouse bourbon. Man, is this thing fast! I think I’ll spend more time setting up and clearing down afterwards than actually distilling.

I am thrilled! It’s making new challenges regarding storage, but it’s definitely nicer to work with. And I just stripped 10 gallons of sugarhead in 2 hours, from taking the still down to putting it back up on the shelf. That’s nice!!

Now that you have an electric keg, it won't be long until you graduate to a 2- or 3-inch modular rig and a shotgun condenser.Steve Broady wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2023 8:24 amI am thrilled! I’m already thinking about a 2” column. VM is high on my way the moment. Also have some bubble cap plates in the works, if I can ever get time to work on them.Deplorable wrote: ↑Fri Sep 22, 2023 5:44 pm Now that you have an electric keg, it won't be long until you graduate to a 2- or 3-inch modular rig and a shotgun condenser.

Congratulations on the upgrade. Can I assume there's a drain on the opposite side ?

And as a bonus of starting with smaller boilers that will take the same element, the baby boiler you have can run what's made from just one strip in the keg if you don't want to build up enough low wines to run a big batch.

^ ^ ^ Exactly!
I made a little 120V pot still, but what I'd also like is a nice little reflux column that can be attached as well. That's a future project I guess.

I wish I had room for a copper still, but the kegs are so convenient to run where you can. I like your setup. I’m going into the kitchen next weekend. It seems to rain when I want to run outside.

Ten minutes to go on an online auction. Local.
Bid fifteen dollars (plus tax plus buyer's premium) for a pair of kegs.
And thirty dollars for a 'boiler'.
Stainless, could be a wood fired still.

Slightly off topic I know.
Got the kegs.
The boiler went to nearly seventy bucks in the last minutes; I was tempted but commonsense and poverty prevailed.
