Aeration of wash/mash with hose

Since we all have different backgrounds using different materials I thought I would add this. I have done a lot of work with hydroponics. I came across this supplier who works mainly with sewage plants.
This is a silicone hose which should be fine around low proof mashes. What makes it worth while is it is basically clog free and easy to clean. I just increased air pressure which inflates the hose thus cleaning out all the holes.
If you can pay a little more their air pumps are quite and I used them for over 10 years with no problems.

I've never had any issues aerating using a drill & mixing paddle. Everything seems to aerate adequately just with the amount of mixing that normally needs done. I considered a relatively large air pump & air stone, but never found the need for it at all really. I also considered attaching a small air line to a fitting on the inlet of my submersible aquarium pump. That would draw in air, and blow out a massive amount of fine bubbles as it flows.

I read mash but maybe you're referring to using it in fermentation? I have always mixed with a large ladle a couple of times and I have always had good fermentations...there is the exception sometimes but generally the yeast is happy

I've wondered about this. I got the idea somewhere to disturb a ferment as little as possible.

I'll punch down a grain cap a little but not much. The exception is YLAY which I'll use my big spoon all the way to the bottom.

Should a ferment be left to it's own devices or agitated or aerated after yeast is pitched?

Typically aeration is done before pitching yeast. After that you just leave it alone.

I recall reading that aeration is good for yeast reproduction/propagation, but not ideal for fermentation. I don't remember the specifics

A problem I see with using compressed air is the possibility of contamination from the lubricant a compressor needs.

The pumps there I use are fine for this. You just need the right pump. This type of hose creates a fine bubble.Which besides using before and after and be used to oxygenate a barrel quickly.Plus they can be used to pull a vacuum.

Demy I didn't realize a mash is a mash only after fermentation. I thought we allowed the mash to be fermented.

Generally, oxygenation is necessary at the beginning of fermentation, after which it is better to let the yeast work in anaerobic mode. It could be used to start blocked fermentations or CO2 recirculation (mixer function) or to accelerate aging within certain limits.

Maybe slightly off topic , but Saltbush Bills pressure washer works a treat . It adds water , mixes /dissolves and Aerates.
When I first saw it I thought WTF
But it actually works a treat .

That's the only way I've done it for a long time now Yummy, it's great for mixing molasses into a wash or for dissolving sugar into sugar washes.
Also great for stirring up the settled grains in the bottom of the UJ fermenter.
Works especially well on larger ferments 100L and more.
