cleaning a newly made parrot

Little or nothing to do with distillation.

cleaning a newly made parrot

Post by Grappa-Gringo »

hey there...just made a parrot (first time) and was wondering if there is a method to clean it out
like you would a vinegar run through a still.
As the pressure from the still helps with the initial flush of the still,
there isn't a "flush" for the parrot-- other than the drip drip drip out of the condenser...
Any thoughts and ideas will be listened to--- not acted on...just listened to....lol

I haven't used my parrot in years, but if IIRC I boiled my parrot in a pot of water/vinegar, then directed the spout from my shotgun down into it. Held in an empty stainless pot, I just ran sac alcohol steam for awhile (it eventually filled) then turned on the coolant to the condenser for awhile to 'rinse' it out. If your condenser doesn't orient vertically you might be able to fashion a section of copper tubing to do so.

I think most members get satisfactory results just from an extended session of the drip-drip-drip method.

you can simply soak it in a container with detergent (for a night), then wash with water and then with alcohol.

If I was serious about getting it clean.
I'd use at least 3 out of 5 of these ideas.

Clean with hot soapy water and brush everything inside.
Get creative on how to clean places that are hard to get to.
Use high proof alcohol and brush it some more.
Soak the new parrot in backset and brush it again.
Then put the parrot into a pot of boiling water for a while.

If I ever get around to building mine, (doubtful), I'll clean it in the dishwasher, then take the still outdoors and do the vinegar and sacrificial runs through it with no cooling water in the condenser, as I do for a new condenser build.

The take away is do it outdoors .

This is pumping alcohol vapour straight though and venting it to the ….. outdoors .

On no account should this be done indoors ….. especially if there is a gas burner .

Personally ,I’d make it with Lead free soft Solder and a Zinc Chloride based flux which is water soluble . I’d stick a bottle brush down the tubes with some high pressure water and call it done ….. but thats just me . :ewink:
