Grapefruit juice

Post by MooseMan »

I'm probably very late to the party here and everyone is already doing it, but I've just discovered that a splash of nice bitter acidic grapefruit juice, transforms a G&T that's just that little bit to sweet for my tastes.

Makes the drink look like muddy crap, so probably not ideal for showing off your finest gin when entertaining, but it's a level up, honestly!

If you squeeze the juice into the drink without any pulp, it will look like a normal G&T made using a lemon.

I make Grapefruit Gin by using fresh zest for the citrus component, then use fresh grapefruit for the G&T.

Yesterday, I collected some for squeezing to make ice cubes to use when they are out of season.

Funny! I just made a gin lime and lemonade, and strained the lime through a little tea sieve to keep things civilised. But… three years ago I made a grapefruit wine and even though it was as tart as hell, if you got over the initial shock it was delicious (but definitely not for everyone). Good times on the citrus.

That is kinda funny Justin .
We had a Grapefruit tree …. Request of Daughter who funnily never ever ate one  …… anyway, made a Grapefruit wine .( Substituted Grapefruit for an Orange wine recipe ) it wasn’t bad bad , but it wasn’t great .

After a few tries we ended up with a recipe we called GOO .
It was One part Grapefruit and two parts Orange . That become a family favourite wine for several years .

But yes , I can imagine Grapefruit juice being quite ideal in a GnT

This was just juice from a carton Chris, so cloudy and with bits, happened to be in the fridge so i tried it. Fresh would have been infinitely better.

Grapefruit Gin is still on my to do list when I can get some.
And I really want to make some with Sea Buckthorn, but you guys around the globe may not get those growing. Taste halfway between orange juice and battery acid!

A trick I do with several fruit, is to freeze the juice, then thaw it through a filter to make a clearish concentrate.

AFAIK, we don't have Sea Buckthorn here ion NZ, but there is something that looks similar that I haven't tried yet.

You can definitely get the berries dried and packaged Chris, so you may be able to get some shipped, to do an infusion ala sloe gin?

I'm going to do that later in the year when they are ripe, and also make a gin with them as a base botanical in place of citrus.
