Yeah I wouldn't want the real round... just a wooden replica is fine with me. I was a 12 bravo. (Combat Engineer) demolition specialist. But that was a long time ago. . I do like just about anything military surplus..

I really didn't have a clue what size it was.
Just a thing that was offered to me as a swap for some antique woodworking tools that I had for sale at a swap meet.
I found it interesting and it seemed a resonable deal at the time.
It just happened to be in the photo, kinda surprised it created so much interest.
It will probably end up getting used as a door stop or getting sold at another swap one day.

It's funny the things that people notice in a picture. I would've never seen it, had it not been pointed out to me.
I'd buy it from you, if we didn't live a whole world apart lol. It'll make a nice door stop. I'd get one made for myself but I don't know anyone with a lathe.
I did notice the antique tools as well. I love just about all antiques. Thanks for sharing. I'd be too embarrassed to show the mess I have in my basement. It's a cross between a war zone and a natural disaster.

Yeah. You guys have tunnels... and shelves and stuff. I have a 4.5m x 3m shed at the end of the garden which contains about 1m³ of dry timber for various projects (window sills, a bed frame, repairs to the apple press), and all the tools for working on them - my workebench (which is hidden under the various projects and tools that have no other home) - the apple press - and currently, my still and steam generator. There is no path through the shed which does not involve some amount of climbing. I'm seriously considering installing ropes and just swinging around over the top of it all! :-)

Well, I did it again

I digging through the East tunnel looking for the apple peeler/corer and suddenly found myself throwing out 2 big boxes of perfectly good bottles just because they had embossed names on them. I'm almost to the Southeast corner where the majority of bottles are stored. I can see at least 4 boxes of what I think are beer bottles and just begin to see the liquor bottles.

However I do have quite a few liquor bottles in the back of my truck, that don't have anybody's name embossed on them, to replace the one's I'm throwing away, but still...

Lost an old friend Monday my last really close friend. Once there was a dozen or so , we all hunted, went shooting camping fishing and drinking together.they all had my back and i had theres and now i am all there is of our group, t'is the damnest feeling. Owen was a big man with a big heart give ya the shirt off his back very literally too. He was my ex's stepfather and even though ive not been with her near 15 yrs he'd introduce me as his son in law. Hes helped me with plenty of runs, been mentioned at the bench before likely will be again but im about as broken as can be right now. Who will sit with me while the kettle boils and listen to my bs now, memories will be my company now, a darker and colder world

Been a while since the bench was occupied, ain’t it? Life goes on for most. Seems like when you get to an age, everyone you knew is gettin old or passin on.i was out planting fruit trees today (damn do I ache now) and thought I might be old before they bear. But what the hell guys, it’s the future and someone will enjoy it. Meantime I’m gonna mash in tomorrow. That I know I’ll enjoy.

Sorry to hear of your loss Crow. As Yonder said, you get to an age and many of us are getting there. I am only at the start of the curve but know what the future holds. Wish the distance were closer. From your posts I would love to sit with you by a still and listen to your stories.

Time to enlist the next generation so they can hear the stories.

I am finding as I get older I want to travel less. I used to love to travel, have been to Europe, Mexico, South America, Africa and India. And for almost 20 years I caught a plane most Monday mornings to go to a client site for the week. 1.5 million miles on United and another 300K on American. But anymore I don't like going the two miles to the store. I just want to stay home, take care of my place and do my own thing with no interference.

Quiet round the fire now friend.
Here’s to the big brutes with a heart of gold!
Our brothers carry the wind and the crackling embers with them.

Too many damned lucky fish left un-caught.
Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

Just spent the last couple of days on and off re-reading about 150 odd pages of this thread. Laughed, cried, cried laughing, so many human experiences. So many memories, so many stories told, so many stories left untold. Tall tales and true and many halfway between 🤣. Life has got a bit on top of me lately but i really should contribute to this thread again

Pull up a bench and a bottle Croweater. Been a hell of a week on this side of the water as well. Father was killed last week. 87 years old and out on a tractor, ran it down a steep ravine. Given his age and declining health I don't feel all that bad. Much better way to go than spending a few months withering away filling a diaper in a home or hospital.

And a note to all you old farts, get that funeral stuff planned out and paid for ahead of time. Don't make your family figure all that shit out in the couple days after you die. Have that conversation with your kids, do they want a gravestone to go visit or is it ok to spread ashes to the wind? Do they (or you) want you cremated or buried? If buried, open casket or closed (assuming you still look good). Might even be good to write out an obituary, it can be a pain to figure out the date you were married if you outlive everyone that would know and Lord knows which box, folder, or old suitcase the marriage certificate might be in.

Sub, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. Be happy in his life and that his passing was quick and not a long, decline to oblivion. Mom is 93 now. Painful to see the decline.

How’s to an old “war story” to wake things up? Years back I did a protective service mission for theUS Sec Def, Cap Weinberger it was. He and the wife tucked in for the night and we told the hotel no calls, route them to me. They cut the lines! Come morning, we couldn’t give him a wake up call, no phones. Knocked several times, nothing. Had to key my way in and “excuse myself” ‘cause it’s wakie time. There he was, nekked as a jay bird, wrapped around the missus. Never forget that one.

Damn bench is in neglected shape. Guess I’ll tidy it up 🤞it’s not a waste of time.

Lotta new faces around hear and day rarely goes by I don’t think about the many “family” I’ve met here over the years. I’ve met quite a few like minded individuals here and shared many a tear in laughter and sorrow. If you haven’t I highly recommend grabbing a bottle nd pulling up a comfy seat and read this thread.

On that note to vent a little the Jed household decided that the maid should fire the butler and the butler should fire the maid. Wasn’t an eazy decision but 🤞they can each still be friends and avoid the mean nasty bullshit.
welcome aboard some of us are ornery old coots but if you do a lot of
reading and don't ask stupid questions you'll be alright most are
big help
