Easy flange making tool

Post by dukethebeagle120 »

Make your own flange quickly
No welding
IMG_20240403_195534056.jpg
Use the crack ground into the wrench to roll out the metal.
When you get it shaped hammer it level and a lite sanding on a flat surface will square it up.
Easy peasy.15 minute job

I do! I get exactly what he is doing. Great idea.

Heat the end 3/8 of the tubing till dull red, let it cool and that modified wrench can be used to turn a flange for making a tri clamp connection. It would work without annealing the copper but annealing it will make it easier to stretch.

I been doin these for a long time.
A little filing and they look great
I do em cold with little effort.
Use a cutting grinding wheel to cut a thin slit the width of the flange and you get a perfect width flange all the way around

I remember seeing that idea on here maybe about 10 years ago .
I tried it but I tore the copper trying to go too far in one go . Found I needed to bend maybe 20-30° and flare all around , then go another 20-30° for the next flare etc until it was at 90° .
I also annealed it first …. Easier on the wrists :ewink:

I did mine with a wooden clamp jig I made, and a ball pein hammer.
It works well but it's s noisy!
The hardness of my 2.5" would have definitely needed annealing if I tried the suggested way, but if I ever need to do another flange I'll try it, nice one duke.

When you roll the lip your only taking the width of the flange.
So it may seem stiff ,but it's really not.
The pipe shown was the. Heavey guage copper and I did it with little effort.
Once rolled you take a hammer and a flat surface and peen out the high spots.
Takes 10-15 minutes in all but save's in waiting for flanges in your builds
I little filing to make it "Purdy" then your off again.
Dunno if he's still around, but stillerboy showed me some pretty good tricks on here a few years ago.

No. Unfortunately I don't think we will be hearing from Stillerboy again. Last time we talked he told me he felt his time was better spent elsewhere. He helped me immensely and I'm sure many others. I personally will miss him.

Yeah, Mars’s style has always been direct, mostly because of his passion for distilling and wanting others to do the same. Always willing to share his knowledge, but Mars is getting up there in age and has had to prioritize his time. It’s unfortunate to lose such a competent distiller, especially for the new folks here.

I don't know how to search a specific users post, or I would have before I commented.
If you have a member's screen name handy, just click on it. The member's post activity is listed mid-page on the right hand side.

If you do not have a screen name handy, simply scroll down to the bottom right of any page and click on Members (next to Delete Cookies).
Click on Find a member and enter the Screen name, then Search. If you don't remember the screen name, go to your kitchen and fix yourself a drink (or refresh the one you're drinking). It then may come to you.

This really comes in handy when you want to retrieve a member's post you remember reading but can't remember the thread it was posted on.

Apologies to Duke for highjacking his thread a little.
This does seem like a great idea. And as someone who hasn't started his VM build,I will definitely be trying this method.
And if anyone is not that talented when it comes to soldering or welding, it's a fabulous alternative.

Forgot to ask Duke, do you solder fill the back of the flange?
It doesn't show that in your photos.
When I rolled my flanges I filled the shoulder with a thick bead of solder and filed it to a similar angle as a Tri clamp flange.
One of them that had less solder fill, was an unreliable seal until I added more to thicken it up.

No.
Never had an issue
I do tighten the clamp down tight though
Usually they leak cause of not being level.
After rolling,a quick sanding to level out the mating surface takes care of that
