Hello From a potential hobbiest

hello everyone glad to be here, My wife and I are getting into this hobby slowly, well slowly for her I already have a wash going as I'm still learning how to run it. My wife wants to make beer and I'm looking into rums and vodkas. I can't wait to scroll through the forums make posts and dive into the deep end of this hobby.


current setup due to limited space is

brewzilla gen 4 35l
all the addons for beer making for her
and a alco engine pot still lid for me.
all in one was key for us until we get into our home and have more room at that point I would like to make my own still.

It's great that you're also doing this with your wife, a lot of guys don't even get support from their wives for their hobbies, let alone active participation!

It is good to have your wife on board. When I got back into this hobby a few years ago I would make beer and she would make wine, we work together on it. As I got into distilling she will come down and hang out or lend a hand as needed. For the most part her interests have moved on to other things but I never get the stink eye because a run is taking too much time away from something else. Try and keep it a team effort.

Thanks all ya she loves the beer making and I am as well which is surprising since I'm not a huge beer guy, but this homemade stuff is really good, it's becoming a close second to rum. I'm doing my best to keep her involved since she has never had a hobby before just worked and school, so now we both share working out as a hobby as well as craft beer and spirits so I'm super excited.

I'm also getting ready to do my first rum run but struggling to find a good video or wiki on the steps, if you guys have a link to a forum on here that you think would help that would be great.

ya, I saw these but I was more or less looking for the first time running a still post so I checked the still operations information page, didn't find much except for the cm operation post.

From my understanding your " alco engine" is a small "short column" boka type still ...an LM , "liquid management".
If you were to buy a cheap power controller, and remove the packing to reduce reflux there is no reason that it won't make good Rum.
That is unless I'm wrong about alcoengine stills.
Having said that, this isn't the Q and A section, it's for introductions and welcomes only.
Post any further questions in the beginners sections of the forum and you will get plenty of help.
Do try to use the forums search functions to do your own research first though.
