Dressing the part
My friend and I are just getting into this fantastic hobby. We've purchased a variety of equipment already and are planning our first distillation for next week. We have been joking that we need to also dress the part and purchase denim overalls.
But then I was watching a video by Jesse from Still It. In it, he suggested that distillation was akin to alchemy. Now my friend and I are thinking hooded robes and perhaps engraving some alchemical symbols on our still.
Thoughts?

Depends where you live….where I am, there’s no way I’m wrapping myself in Druid robes inside of a shed with a boiler running
Overalls and no shirt all the way

Re: Dressing the part
My still holds an honored position between the living room and kitchen.
I clean it, fill it, and plug it in. As it is slowly heating up I connect the cooling hose, test connections and adjust the water flow.
In an hour the drip begins.
I have never bothered to change clothing.

"Dressing the part"
My thought is mashing, fermenting and distilling is often messy and stinky.
Dress accordingly and if Ya don't do laundry, ask permission from who does.

Re: Dressing the part
I've learned to wear yesterday's clothes on hobby day. Mashing gets messy, and sitting next to a running still for 6 hours makes you stink.
Clothes worn on "runday Sunday" go straight in the wash after clean up is done. You'd be surprised how much different the individual jars smell after a shower and clean clothes.
You know how smokers can't smell how bad they stink? It's like that. You get nose blind, and don't even realize that you wreak of moonshine.

Folks made fun of them for smelling like the hogs they raised.
After doing my first true sour mash, I realized what the smell was about.
It wasn't the hogs, it was the spent sour mash.

I don't dress to advertise that there might be likker in my shed. The less undesirables that know, the better.

I’ve got a nice black apron I sometimes remember to wear. Justina doesn’t like the molasses splashes.

I was going to suggest that Yummy, but didn't want to distress anyone with the mental image.

Re: Dressing the part
I've been wearing shorts and a t-shirt and one of these. I have one I've had for years for welding/soldering/brazing, and I thought a clean one would work around the still & mash pot. It keeps the hot stuff off and everything behind it as cool as possible. I've been known to wear the original in my shop with just my underoos and sandals depending on the weather and the job at hand. I actually thought about overalls, but I'm not a fan of pants.

You wear clothes?
A few years ago we were mashing up a corn/grain bill in a 32 gallon brute with the boiling water method and while it was sitting overnight it sprung an expanding leak and ended up emptying out all over the cellar floor. My gf at the time woke up in the middle of the night and down there scooping it up with a dustbin into another brute and in the nude!
I put a ring on that girls finger - “wife material”

Mash converted btw, fermented as expected and made a nice drop

Cheers,
jonny

Huh! Where I’m from you may hang your flip flop in a thong. Must mean something different on the upside down part of the world!

Re: Dressing the part
I grew up in an Aussie family in Canada, we learned early that thongs were something you stuck your foot in... and it wasn't until the late 70s or early 80s that "" thong" bikini or underwear became a normal term here.. I still can't call footwear thongs without my kids cracking up.

Re: Dressing the part
Growing up they were usually flip flops and occasionally we heard the term thongs, but a "thong" to me has always been synonymous with a G-string or "butt floss" . In the Army, everyone called them "shower shoes".Dancing4dan wrote: ↑Thu Oct 24, 2024 8:02 pm

For a while my kids knew them as chew toys, because the pup seemed to always chew them, but never shoes.
