Stainless steel drum
So I acquired a stainless steel drum but I see that there is browning on the inside on bottom and the presssure washer cleaned most of it but what can I pour into it with some water to let it sit for a day or two to make bottom look like new so it doesn’t leave a scorched flavor in future runs
(maybe baking soda, washing soda, borax, or vinegar)
One of them hopefully would be okay since it’s stainless (inert metal) so I think it would be fine using the washing soda I think would be my best chance but I just want to know if anyone had any scrub free ideas that they know works so I’m not spending useless money trying to clean this stainless steel drum out
The main problem is I can’t get my hand inside cause it has a 2” npt port and 3/4” npt port and they are on the top and the scorching is on the inside of the bottom
Actually what about “bar keepers friend cleanser” it’s stainless steel safe?
(maybe baking soda, washing soda, borax, or vinegar)

Re: Stainless steel drum
Depending on what it is you try PBW and hot water left it sit for a day.
Re: Stainless steel drum
I would weld or solder a 6" or 8" tri clamp on the barrel so I could clean. I have a 4" on a keg and it's too small. I use a brush with a long handle on this keg.

How will you be heating this boiler? With an electric element? If so, I'd just get it as clean as you reasonably can. Fill the boiler with enough water to completely cover the element (and then some). Let the element boil the water, let it sit and see if that loosens it up. It would help if the boiler were insulated too.Chronical wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:01 am So I acquired a stainless steel drum but I see that there is browning on the inside on bottom and the presssure washer cleaned most of it but what can I pour into it with some water to let it sit for a day or two to make bottom look like new so it doesn’t leave a scorched flavor in future runs

If that doesn't work, I'd try the vinegar cleaning run (1-part water, 1-part vinegar). Next comes the sacrificial alcohol run. It should be clean after your standard cleaning runs.

If the scorch is organic matter , Caustic soda and water will eat through it .Just be careful to nit get it on your hands or eyes .
I had some ceramic evaporating bowls at work that had melted sugar burnt black on them . No amount of scrubbing or washing would budge it . I soaked them in Caustic soda and water and a after a few days it all come off just needing a light wipe out .

Drop in a length of chain, add a dash of whatever you have that's got the highest pH, a handful of salt or sand, and a kettle full of boiling water.Chronical wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:01 am So I acquired a stainless steel drum but I see that there is browning on the inside on bottom and the presssure washer cleaned most of it but what can I pour into it with some water to let it sit for a day or two to make bottom look like new so it doesn’t leave a scorched flavor in future runs

Then just roll/slop the chain around on the bottom for a bit.

Re: Stainless steel drum
Bar keepers friends worked wonders I just let over flow after rinsing out twice then pressure washed all that is left is very faint brownish tint where it was at but nothing solid anymore
Re: Stainless steel drum
So yea bar keepers worked but I’m gonna try that if I still taste it after a vinegar run and a corn run but at clean as it looked I doubt it’ll carry anything throughMooseMan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 2:25 pmDrop in a length of chain, add a dash of whatever you have that's got the highest pH, a handful of salt or sand, and a kettle full of boiling water.Chronical wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:01 am So I acquired a stainless steel drum but I see that there is browning on the inside on bottom and the presssure washer cleaned most of it but what can I pour into it with some water to let it sit for a day or two to make bottom look like new so it doesn’t leave a scorched flavor in future runs

Re: Stainless steel drum
So if I was to use a keg to boil water and add port it into the bottom of side would that work for a steamer setup, like is that all it takes is to port the steam into the mash and it’ll make vapor once it warms the mash?

Re: Stainless steel drum
I personally would run the steam through one of the bungs and down to the bottom of the drum. Porting it through the bottom side of the drum creates some problems. Like if the drum contains more fluid than the keg, it will flow back into the keg. You'll want to read up on steam setups too, there's an entire section of this forum dedicated to steam rigs.

Re: Stainless steel drum
The metal chain is not a good idea, unless it’s a stainless steel chain. Don’t use any metal to clean the barrel other than stainless or it could lead to rust. Even stainless brushes and non-metallic scrubbers that have been used previously on other metal types should not be used on stainless steel.MooseMan wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 2:25 pmDrop in a length of chain, add a dash of whatever you have that's got the highest pH, a handful of salt or sand, and a kettle full of boiling water.Chronical wrote: ↑Tue Nov 19, 2024 10:01 am So I acquired a stainless steel drum but I see that there is browning on the inside on bottom and the presssure washer cleaned most of it but what can I pour into it with some water to let it sit for a day or two to make bottom look like new so it doesn’t leave a scorched flavor in future runs

Regardless of what you use to clean the barrel, be sure to passivate the stainless steel after the cleaning to help prevent rust. Search for “Passivate” and you’ll find several threads about it. Using Bar Keepers Friend is one way to passivate stainless. It contains the right kind of acid.

Re: Stainless steel drum
this is why I searched long and hard for a stainless steel barrel with a top that can be removed, even better it has a 6" and 2" triclamp already welded to it!

It's not hard to add a Tri-Clamp ferrule. I cut the hole crudely using a 4" angle grinder and cutting disk. After having a guy TIG weld the ferrule, I did the finish grinding using the angle grinder.
