Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
Spent some of tonight making a few treats ready for Xmas day and thought some of the members here might like the recipe.
Ive used the same Rum Ball recipe for many years , this year I made rum balls using two different recipes.
This is the winning recipe out of the two that I made.
Original recipe below.
8 Weet-Bix crushed
1/2 cups desiccated coconut
2 tbs cocoa (Coco Powder)
1 cup sultanas
1 400g can condensed milk
1 tbs rum
1/2 cups extra coconut
Dry ingredients except extra coconut into a bowl and mix then add rum and milk, mix well then take small amounts and roll into a ball then roll in the extra coconut.
SBB's Notes Modified Recipe.
I modified this recipe a little as it seemed lacking in the Rum department and it turned out really well I think.
Crush the wheat-bix as fine as you can by hand, add all the other dry ingredients , then add 6-7 table spoons of home made rum.
Now add the condensed milk slowly as you mix the other ingredients together......you need to stop short of using the whole tin as the mix will become to runny due to adding all the extra rum. If the mix seems too wet add a couple more Weetbix, if to dry add a little more condensed milk.
Your looking for a firm moist sort of mix that can be easily rolled into balls .
A heaped tea spoon full of mix for each ball is about the right size, once you have the ball rolled drop it into a bowl containing more desiccated coconut and coat them in the coconut.
Keep you hands wet while rolling the balls by dipping them in water from time to time.
Once you have made them keep them in the fridge ...they will keep well for a couple of months if you don't eat them all first
This recipe makes about 36 balls..I intend making a couple more batches tomorrow to give to friends .

Got a funny story about rum balls. Sister inlaw decided to make em one year, she presented them Chrissy day, had a taste and my ass puckered at the taste, fak they were strong, I said bloody hell they got some rum!. She said, oh yeah, I forgot the rum in the recipe so just poured it over the top

Rum in the mixing bowl and then a creamy rum liquor drizzle is my favorite way to simultaneously satisfy my boozy and sweet tooth.

Saltbush, my wife wants me to make this but we do not know what weet-bix are? Looked it up and was wondering what is a substitute for it in the US.

Re: Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
Damn , thought you had them there Bushy.....Will see what I can find.
EDIT ....looking around the net it seems that weetabix and weet bix are the same thing.....also that you can buy weetabix in the USA.
Some googling should turn some up I think.....let me know if it does not and I'll find an alternative for you.

I have not seen it in any grocery stores but I will see the box on google and will look to see what the cereal looks like for an alternative. I can buy it on Amazon.

Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

Re: Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
SBB, my wife found a recipe for bourbon balls that was her grandmothers. I am 72 so you can imagine how old the recipe is. My wife wants to try the bourbon balls because she remembers them as a young adult. I have a lot more bourbon in my cabinet than rum so I will make them and if they are good I will post the recipe in a new thread as not to take this recipe off topic.

Re: Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
Glad you found the Weetabix, pretty sure they are exactly the same as Weetbix.
I only use that recipe because I prefer the texture that they give. There are a lot of Rum Ball recipes around and many use Biscuits as a base ingredient.
Our Biscuits are what you all call Cookies. The Biscuits/ cookies used are the same as the types some people might use to make a cheese cake base.
Here are a couple of those recipes as an alternative. https://www.bestrecipes.com.au/recipes/ ... 4/dc2ghlf0

Re: Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
You know you're from Australia when Rum balls get passed around, no one wants them but the kids and the brandy custard was already too much...
Merry Christmas everyone!
Hope everyone has a great time, happy Christmas and a great new year to everyone.

It's that time of year again.....time to break into the Rum barrel and make Rum balls.
Re: Rum Balls / Christmas Treats
Yessir Mr. Bill.
Been trying to perfect a "Butter cake" .
I think I have it very close to master'd.
Gonna transition into rum cake now. My crackhead, sweet tooth is pretty excited about my immediate future.
Only god knows why I'm not 300 lbs by now.
