Thank you Badmotivator

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Thank you Badmotivator

Post by The Booze Pipe »

Ben gave me one of his original Badmo barrels years ago when he was still working out of his garage. I never made anything I thought worthy of filling it with (even though I could make a decent simple sour mash).

Finally years later, I filled my first Badmo with my first all-grain bourbon: a corn, wheat, and rye grain bill.

Ben was an incredibly generous person, always willing to help, or give what he could. I wish I had more time to get to know him better. His family and friends didn't deserve to loose such a man that soon.

Anyway, I just wanted to say, thank you Ben I appreciate the barrel, it's been put to good use.

Nice barrel! You should be pulling some great booze out of there in a few years.

His passing was a big loss to not only our community but the world in general as he was a very good man. I contacted him directly several times when I started making some clones. Mine are not near that pretty. He was always ready to offer help and suggestions even though it meant I was not purchasing his product.

I have in-laws in Oregon and had plans to visit Ben had timing worked. But it was too late by the time I next returned to Oregon. I think of him every time I make or fill a new clone.

You can still come out and visit! The Badmo shop is alive and well. And hopefully we are planning a meet & greet for this June.

RIP to Ben. They are a great group and I like the way they do business. I have quite a few and have had good results with them
Curious, I hope you aren't storing them with the wooden head up. You won't get any contact with the wood if you do.

Wow, that is an old barrel. My oldest barrel is #238. Its been sitting, full of a 21% rye bourbon for 3 years now. I've been really stingy taking the occasional dram for tasting every few months since it turned 2, so it's barely had any removed.
It's likely to just sit there and age for another year before I pull enough to fill a pint bottle.

I've got #484 with a 4 grain bourbon - about 32 months now. I've probably taken about a liter over that time.

In November I noticed a split in the SS bain marie, on the rim right at the top. I know it wasn't there in September, and I didn't lose too much to the Angels, so I transferred the bourbon to glass.

I popped the head out of the can and cut it down to fit a 6 qt bain marie, making a new 5 qt barrel with the same head. You may notice that the head is recessed more than usual - but it doesn't leak. I transferred the 4 grain bourbon into this and it was full to the top.
So here is Badmo484 V2:

BTW, I sent Chris the pics and he sent me a new one - said he had one batch of BMs that was prone to splitting.

Chris has been the greatest to work with, and is devoted to continuing Ben's legacy. AS soon as I can get a little extra cash freed up, I need to get a 6th barrel from him.

Chris has been very generous! I'm stoked to have the legacy live on. We're having a get-together early June, if you're able to join I think there will be some time to build a barrel!

The end of May through the end of August is going to be pretty busy for us traveling between Idaho, Nevada, Washington, Montana, and Oregon. Visiting family, spreading mom's ashes, camping trips, and RV rallies, We've got a pretty packed summer this year.
