It started out as a normal sat, I had a rum wash that was ready to run, wife and kids are doing their thing, and we have a stray kid in the house. Nothing unusual. As a parent of 9 kids we've had stray kids seeking shelter numerous times. Kids have problems at home and require a safe place to stay for a time period.
In a time frame of 30 min everything went to hell in a hand basket. Our refugee kid's mom contacts my wife that we have "kidnapped their child (15 yr old), and going to call the cops. I'm mid run when wife comes down and tells me. 15 min later Jay our oldest at home comes down and says "we have company"
I kill power to the still, ask the kids if they can smell it in the house, all said yes. I have almost zero sense of smell. Open all the windows on off side of the house from the entry.
I go upstairs, wife and stray are talking to 2 RCMP officers out on back deck doing a "wellness check" on a minor that the mother reported as kidnapped. They did not have a warrant to enter the house so wife kept them outside.
The wife and stray managed to satisfy the RCMP concerns about her safety, but had they gained entrance while I had still running I'm sure it would have been a free for all of fuckery.
Cops are gone, stray is safe to stay with us, and they didn't find a still in full production.
I need a drink.

Been there. When I still ran outside at night, all of a sudden I had headlights on mine. Cops pulled up along the house looking for a random fugitive in the area.

My stomach dropped so hard I think it fell out of my ass, along with some other material.

Good one NorthWoods I don't know how it is around there, but most officers of the law here would think how cool it was to have a home distillery... I've met several police that distill themselves!

Under normal circumstances that would probably be the case but when they are there to access the suitability of caregivers to minors , seeing a Still might not go down so well .

NorthWoodsAb if your "Unit" is Small enough ( to be inside, I'm guessing in may be ) cook up a good, as in believable good, load of Bull shit. Mine has always been around beer brewing, but any good tale will work. The reason is cops don't want more headaches than they already have, they are more than willing to swallow a believable yarn than get involved in the paperwork and other total BS that they would have to go through. So if they do come inside and should ask you'll be ready.

That was my big concern Yummy. The last thing I want is to be reported to Child Services. I don't normally run anything when we have any strays around and my Lab is in a no-go zone in the basement, so most people don't ever know its there. I got kind of blind sided by this one. I had no idea about the background drama involved in the kids visit.
It worked out well in the end.

Not to be so sensational, I have lived in Vancouver BC and the police in Canada have a high respect for boundary vs. the US. They often do what they want and justify it later in the states.
