Clenched jaw after drinking

Post by Yummyrum »

By BIL (brother in law) got offered a bottle by one of his neighbours .
Naturally , he was keen to share and see what I thought of it .

So this is typical Aussie retiree with a T500 making Neutral and adding Home brew shop essence . I have met the guy briefly a few times and he’s a good bloke .

To be honest , I drank it and smiled . Can’t say anything stuck out as wrong . Just what you’d expect from that system .

Anyway , tonight he tells me that after drinking it on a couple of occasions now , he has experienced a stiff/ sore jaw which has lasted many hours . ….. something he says , he’s never had drinking my stuff .

Now my BIL is a seasoned drinker and can stomach a lot .

So my question is has anyone ever experienced this sore /locked jaw effect and any Ideas what causes it .

Strange that it would only be with a certain spirit..

About 15 years ago, I started getting TMJ flare ups pretty bad. At the time, I had no idea what it was, and it would only present itself when I was drinking. I would have to hit my jaw pretty hard for it to “unlock”.

Come to find out, it would only flare up when I was dehydrated. I never noticed it outside of drinking alcohol, because for the most part, I drank plenty of water on the day-to-day.

Nowadays, the TMJ doesn’t bother me anymore, but it did get me in the habit of drinking tons of water when consuming the goods.

Not sure if this is relevant to your brother in law, but that was my experience with it.
Here’s to lobster tail and whiskey. Three of my favorite things.

It seems Fletching got it right. A quick search returned the following:

Clenching your jaw after drinking alcohol, especially if it's frequent or severe, might be related to bruxism (teeth grinding) or TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues, which can be exacerbated by alcohol consumption and dehydration.

Sounds logical can’t imagine it would be anything else.

Thanks fletching . Never heard of it before . I’ll ask him about the dehydration and if he’s ever had it before . He’s drunk for years so it is strange that this particular bottle would cause it .

That's really interesting.

I don't understand the difference either, but it is true that some bottles are more prone to headaches than others, so why not TMJ? Might be a combination of dehydration and some other synergistic factor.

I guess on the up side he's fairly quite after a few drinks, the opposite to some.

So I was talking to BIL and he did admit that his Mrs is normally on his case to drink water all day but she was away for the few weeks and he had been slack on the hydration .

Said he had tried the drink in question since she got back and he was drinking water again  and the clenched jaw thing did not happen .

So it does seem like a thing
