This is a Vevor Air Still. I'm making OEG gin. I do my main distilling in a 15gal beer keg. I do my finish gin in this air still. I love it. It's just so damn easy.

Steam stripping rig for mash slurry



The 8" ferrule/top on the steam stripper allows for ease of filling/and cleaning out stripped mash and mash slurry. I'm really happy with that size. Sanitary TIG makes it rock solid. Many thanks to the craftsmanship of Twisted Brick. He made the shotgun condenser used in both rigs.

Hey thanks Copperhead! The boiler port riser is a 4” TC so the first helmet is 4” with a reducer to 3” to the second helmet which then hits the 3” riser with a 3” sight glass at the top. After the elbow at the top it reduces to 2” for the shotgun. Straight up pot still. New parts for me are the 4” boiler port and 4” helmet. Plan this season is to use the dual helmets in addition to a boiler false bottom to cook/vapor infuse grape pomace brandy/grappa. Pomace loosely filled up to around the sight glass which is two helmets and 12” length of 3” diameter riser. I have a 36x3” riser section as well but the ceiling starts to get in the way. At the moment I could rise it up about 16” more and might get a 4” spool to do that before it’s time to start stripping in a month or so.

It's a beauty, Jonny. I am getting a heck of passive reflux from my copper helmet, I can't imagine the kind of reflux you'll get from two if them. Have you put your sight glass under the lowest helmet just to see the reflux you're getting?

The passive reflux isn't as much as with the alembic with the wide column... I usually keep it up top to catch foaming before a puke. That allows me to run it with as much power as possible with it bubbling up into the sight glass and pull the power back if it surges... I should try sight glass underneath the gauge any passive reflux..

Updated the still head config for stripping and steam- stripping. Used two 90 degree stainless elbows and threw in a sight glass--I was able to use it immediatly and avoided a puke. Steam-stripping 7 gallons of mash slurry. 10 gallons of water in the boiler. The chickens get the cooked slurry.

I was asked for some pics of my setup so here goes.
This is what I started with last fall and ran it till the beginning of this summer.

I wanted to improve the final product so I went ahead and made two sieve plates.

Next came the reflux condensator

I ran this for few months and was able to get 85% ABV but that was not good enough. I also built a new cooler for condensation as you can see.

I decided to go for packed column and went from 3,5 inch to 3 inch column. I added tri-clamps as well so everything would be easier to disassemble

This is what I run now and it gives me 95%ABV. I would have wanted to do a bit longer column but I ran out of space!
I pack the column with stainless scrubbers. I tried lava rock as well but it did not perform as well and crumbled a lot.

I also have few upgrades in my mind I want to do:

• Insulate the column

• Add temperature gauge to boiler

• Add valve to the bottom of boiler for easier emptying

• Change to electric heating from gas

• Bigger boiler

What gives you that idea? The thickness alone makes me doubt they're copper. Even IF they were it would benefit with at least a few rolls of copper mesh at the base of the column.

Your right, I thought the same to begin with, but then decided that they look more like stainless.

Thanks, I always make 25 liter batch and that is pretty much the maximum I can fit into the boiler

The still is completely stainless, but there is some room under the reflux condenser, so I put few pieces of copper tubing under there and add one stainless scrubber to keep them in place when I assemble it
