I did think about that, but I'm scrammy-handed so it just looked wrong. Plus, with my small planned working area, I want the condenser hoses nearest the tap & waste, which are on the right.

..and I get to utilise that redundant hole on the other side of the lid with a brace fitting.

This view gives me a rough idea of brace fitting sizes too..

Also, if I add the pot sideways to the lay-flat piping, it'll give me a rough idea of the liebig end clearance, which from a visual guesstimate, is pretty good.

Now I'm just waiting for the soldering torch, just a few more days away on the Silk Road

Oh dear.

I'm definitely overthinking this - I've now come up with:

The Rollercoaster (think cobra, but doing a reverse ferret)

The Ram's Horn (think motorbike twin exhaust manifold)

The Hydra (dragster manifold - Moose, I blame your air cooling experiments for this one! 😆 )

The Hydra, I like it, very apt!

It's certainly got plenty of copper involved in the vapour path, and that's a good thing!

If your balancing act doesn't quite work out in the end, don't stress it, you can add a simple leg under the appropriate bit, that sits on, and presses down on, the pot lid.

Moose, you're going to love the drawing of the air-cooled chandelier condenser I have in my head :D

Ah, been blocked from posting for a while - seems to be fixed for now.

Potential change of tack..

Why? Strength. I wasn't sure an end cap, or even a 30mm long end feed join pipe, would have long-term strength.

I was looking at this 1 1/4" flanged straight, and realised it had a 29mm core... hmmm..

It's even got a nice inset ring to pre-tin, which might make soldering easier (or not). Also, instant conversion for reflux.

Untitled.jpg

I'd seen similar on AliExpress, but this was much cheaper on Amazon, with free delivery next day.

So, it looks like this in-situ, with a 28mm pipe relatively snuggly inside (bit of PTFE tape or maybe silicone sleeve to seal nicely):

WhatsApp Image 2026-02-16 at 17.18.44.jpeg

Problem:

WhatsApp Image 2026-02-16 at 17.18.15.jpeg

File flange to fit, or hammer lid flat to fit?

This is the other candidate - potentially solderless:

It's a 3/4" 304 stainless bulkhead, interestingly with an interior thread that I might be able to squeeze 28mm into, but may need soldering for strength. The whole thing would be removable (ignore rubber seal, I'd replace with a thinner PTFE which would help strengthen it too)

The remainder of the elbows arrived, so another dry fit time.

Assuming you're still in dry-fit mode, you should orient the liebig cooling water inlet/outlet downward so your hoses hang down to prevent kinking.

Bristolian. I think you are about to prove to the world that Vevor is not p.o.s. If you carry on like this, you will probably be able to time-travel with that boiler. It's becoming the Delorean of stills!

This seems to fit the requirements as a go-between on the bulkhead, 28mm should thread quite neatly onto it:

61-REtSJfHL._AC_SL1500_.jpg

Potential: use bulkhead. get above fitting for pot still riser. Locate similar to fit bulkhead to flanged 1 1/4". Interchangeability.

What the hell, it's a few quid and will arrive tomorrow. If it doesn't fit, I can send it back.

My head's melting, I'm definitely not a born plumber/pipefitter :D

But.. here's my basic 2D sketch for an air-cooled 'chandelier' condenser. Dozens of Y's in a 3D matrix.. ..add as many as you like :)

(No, I am not going to build one!)

What Greggn is saying is the barbs for the cooling lines to the Liebig should point towards the ground. That way they hang naturally. Pointed up the hot water from the exit will soften them and the water weight inside the line will try to kink enough to slow or stop water flow.

Hi, yes - I'm aware that in the photo they're pointing up. This is purely to lay flat the design. My intention is to have them soldered hanging down, slightly off the vertical, so they can be routed safely away from the hotplate under the pot.

Yes, that configuration is the winner since you already have most of it. (you can get TC bulkheads but that one you have is fine)

If the 28mm copper riser slides nicely into the stainless, you can easily solder them together when you have the correct flux.
Then it's just a Tri clamp to break the still head away from the boiler. That's best case scenario.

And your air cooled chandelier made me smile I must say, I did briefly consider similar principles to make mine, until I started understanding surface areas on aluminium heatsinks!

Nope, but even when that's full it only adds about 100g - it's 15mm inner, 22mm outer.

The 28mm riser & curve filled with 28mm stubs offsets it.

Next time I get to play with it all, I'll weigh them up to see the balance - won't be exact yet, because solder will add weight, and I'm adding a coil to the condenser, but I can estimate that.

Might want to add the weight of the hoses when they are full of water as well . :ewink:

Seriously though , I think you are doing a good job . But I can’t help but think it’s a Heath Robinson affair just for the sake of it .

You going to do all this wonderful copper creation and it becomes dodgy when you connect it to the boiler lid .
I can’t help but wonder why you can’t solder a triclamp ferrule to the copper riser and just stick a Triclamp bulk head on the lid . …..in fact , stick it in the middle .

What would be the best way to flatten the lid ridge? Spang it with a hammer?

Obviously , plan A is not going to work . When you need to bash the shit out of the lid to make it work , it’s time to rethink it . That idea is plagued with secondary issues like warping the lid seal . If that happens , you might as well just bin the whole thing .

Put the hole in the middle . While you are at it , put a decent size ferrule there . A 2” ferrule in the middle of that Vevor lid will future proof it .

I’m not trying to be an arse .

I started off with 5litre boiler about 15 years ago . Then upgraded to a 25 litre , then a 50 then an 80 .

Point is , you are obviously a handy sort of fella  so , this will not be your first or last build . Bash the lid and stick a weird size connector on it is as good as dead .
Put a common size Tri-clamp fitting in it in the middle , and you’ll be able to use it again and again down the track . A thumper , a Gin still a mini reflux still …. what ever else .
You probably can’t foresee the possibilities yet . I know . When I first started out , all I could see was the immediate project .

Trust me .

As for the to small holes in the lid already . Just cover them . Hell , stuck a useless thermometer in them if you want .:esurprised:…… or a couple of corks .

Sheer bloody-mindedness at this point..!

I'm actually trying to avoid 'dodgy' (my soldering) and aiming for compact, but solid. I am also considering going central.

I have a very small working area - about 1m², so trying to apply as much 'helpful' copper as I can without over-balancing.

This needs to get disassembled and stored away - as much of the pipework needs to fit inside the 12L pot as possible when broken down.

I'll hang the Liebig over the fireplace, call it a Steam Punk hookah :D

I've already been swayed by bigger pots, but - for now - I'm sticking with my PortaPottyStill.

I'll adjust, and adjust again until I think it's as good as it can go for it's size.

I've got about 10 years until I retire & can start to pay real attention to this, I reckon it'll last me and teach me quite a bit until then.

I didn't pick up on the lid thing, I would deffo not do that, put it bang centre mate.

The other little holes you can just solder a bit of flat copper over to seal them. (Cut a bit of pipe open and bash it flat)

Yep, I think I'll go with the general consensus on that :D

Side project results are in - not so much use for the rest of the world, but UK hobbyists might be interested..

Turns out a 3/4" bulkhead and straight BSP adapter fits absolutely sweetly into a 28mm pipe, pretty much cuts it's own thread.

First day off work:

Wife took me shopping for all the Man Food I'd need while she was away (total cheek as I do most of the cooking).

'Adopted Daughter' (old school friend of son) turned up with prime Welsh Valley Boy fiancee to clean house. He's prepped my workshop space for me.

Spent the evening creating and destroying wild designs for the still head layout while burning one of my last hand-rolled cigarellos and sipping unoaked home-brewed Chardonnay.

Some designs survived destruction. More to follow..

DAVIES CONDENSER!!

This will make my plans a bit simpler. I think.

I had come up with a fairly intricate way of tinning a wire spiral down the interior (a loose one would just be too iffy and probably not last long).

So, I'll go around the various Davies-type condensers here and see what I can pick up..
