cracked hydrometer

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

cracked hydrometer

Post by planohog »

I was working with a gumball type mash, and thought I had the correct measurement with added sugars.
Well after that mash got stuck and I could not get it going. I discovered a hair line crack and some moisture inside
my hydrometer. I tossed the entire gumball out.

Lesson learned these are not tempered glass, do not expose them to crazy ranges of water temp trying to clean them up.
Maybe before you start on your data taking , check it with plain water. sg=1.0

I believe the hydrometer gave me bad information after I added the sugar ( it probably was way to high , maybe north of 1.07 )
and the yeast could not deal with it. it never took off, i added new yeast, never took off. tried to get ph closer to 4.0 from 3.5
nothing worked.

pumped it down the drain.
Calibrate everything, and watch out the hyrdrometer glass is sensitive .
