Re: should I wait?
I ferment in a big plastic drum and I just finished a 40 lbs all grain mash this weekend. I faced a similar problem with how I was going to keep it warm in a cold November. I grabbed a 5 gallon bucket, filled it about 3/4 the way with water and suspended it from my shed roof. Dropped it in my drum and put a fish tank heater in the water. Seems like it’ll work for me

so you basically have a heated bucket of water "floating" in your mash? sounds pretty cool. It's so funny how we all do the same thing, but come up with different ways to do it.prattman92 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2023 12:43 pm I ferment in a big plastic drum and I just finished a 40 lbs all grain mash this weekend. I take a nice wooden 'stick'.
Decide on the measurements you want.
Say every 5 litres or every gallon or whatever.
Pour that amount of water in the vessel.
Stand the stick in the water.
Take it out and cut a mark in the stick at the water level.
Do it again with another measure of water.
Note that a lot of vessels are not 'level' at the bottom (take a different amount of liquid for the same height...).
If the sides of the vessel are level from there on up you can just cut measures on your stick,
the same as the distance between the first and second cuts.
Voila, a dipstick.

It’s what seemed the most space saving and cheap solution with what I had on hand. Glad you approve haha

So you are open fermenting rather than sealed with an airlock? Or do you have a way to seal around your rope?prattman92 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 06, 2023 7:33 pm
