Finally got to the last page! took me days to go through, very informative. Thank you Dan!
Will be building 3" 5 plate, since copper is very expensive in my area and 4" in nearly non existent and 3"x36" pipe my neighbour hooked me up for free

I must have been too tired and missed where did you get those brass ferrules for second gen, i ran into some the other day at still dra_gon is that where yours came from ?

The titles are associated with how many posts you've made to the board. So short answer is you'll need to post more.

Alternatively, there are titles for site doners, admins and other titles as bestowed at the pleasure of the gods.

Well, I do Dan.
I am in the research and design phase of a 3 inch flute build. (I know..., but the 3 inch was free). I have read and bookmarked every flute build thread that I can find. I just came back to re-read yours, and I must say that it is one of my favorites. Lots of copper porn, and very detailed.

I hope to pick and choose the things I like out of all the threads I have read and try to combine them into something that will be the sum of all the great inovaton that have been shared here on HD. So many cool, different ways of doing things. Advantages of this or that, depending on what you are looking to be able to do with your final build design. When I am ready, getting close, I will start a thread in the construction page and run my ideas by the crew.

Saw your build on youtube a while back. It wasn't until a couple of days ago that I found the link to here. Very impressive work. I hope you don't mind a few questions.
What are the tolerances for the plates along the column walls? Does the gap get closed off by the liquid or capillary action or does vapor pass through to some degree without diminishing the performance? Just concerned if I try it that the pipe or the plate may end up out of round, leaving a gap.

In your opinion, would a reducing coupling instead of the double plates at the top of the column provide enough support for the product condenser and parrot? I ask because fittings may be cheaper for me than plates.

What grade of copper did you use for the 0.125 plates? (110 -O, 110 1/8-1/4, ...) At that thickness does it matter?

In your earlier build it looked like you used smaller diameter pipe in the dephleg and downcomers. What was the reason for upsizing them?

Thanks again for posting the entire process(es) and answering questions along the way. I'm sure it will save myself and others a lot of time and $ in trial and error.

Dan isn’t on very often, but I will try to give some info that is only taken from what I’ve read from many flute build threads and from the “Flute talk” thread. I do advise to also search other threads on flutes looking at the newer builds and see what designs were used and make your decisions on your blueprint from them.

Yes, it has been done on many builds, search this site is see. A reducing coupler is $40+. I ordered 6 plates 1/8” for about $53 shipped off eBay.

There has been quite a bit of discussion about the height of the water column inside the dephleg and the volume of the vapor tubes. With his larger tubes it reduces a restriction, which causes an increase in vapor velocity, and it also means there is less water inside the dephleg which would give a faster reaction time to any changes in coolant flow.

You may also try searching Emptyglass flute and DetroitDIY flute. Those are the two off the top of my head, besides this one, that are well documented with photos. Read the Flute Talk thread, long but informative, and the HD google search button in the middle of the header is a wonderful thing. It will keep you in this site while you search. Don’t delete what comes up in the browser, just space and add what you are searching for. Good luck.

Its been a long time, but i do reflect back on this thread from time to time. it was the main influence on my own build. this thread and actual communication with Old Dog where he answered some of my questions on the deflegamator and the use of a 3 way valve to operate the condensers.

but Dan, its an awesome thread .... stand proud

I just read back through my column build and can not believe it is coming up on 10 years ago that I started this thread! I have been missing in action for at least the last few years and need to get back to this hobby soon. My last distillation was over three years ago! And is still aging on oak.... new_moonshiner - I will try to attach the last drawing I had for the plate perforations so here you go...
