So "Guest" what do your "mates" call you?

I guess I thought you were the one who claimed copper was bad and plastic (nowadays) is fine etc, etc, etc...
Recently it seems its not you (if it is you) because of the attempt to be productive in the forum, while, shall I say, still abrasive in your replies.

Why not registered or at least sign the posts with a name?
How do we know what weight to give the advice if we don’t know who it comes from?

Hi, I'm not building this Bokakob design right now, but I wonder why you would want a resevoir of liquid over your offtake valve? I thought it would be best to have as small as a resevoir as possible. Bear with me... If you do have a resevoir, it will contain higher percentages of the higher order alcohols that are starting to boil when you are running out of ethanol in the column. I figure it's best to just hold as little liquid over the valve as possible, so the vapor that's currently being produced (and hence falling onto the valve) is the majority of what's coming out of the valve. Hope this makes sense to you guys.

I don't think it makes much of a difference either way. If you are running a multiple distillation potstill, a NS offset, Bokokob's EL, tubes through the column, etc. You turn off the distillate take off once you recognize components coming over which you no longer want.

Guest it's not really a reservoir. I got a sight glass there to see if things are backing up. I set the output to a slow draw and then udjust the reflux accordingly. If I see the level climbing much above the reflux valve in the sight glass I open it a little more.

Hmmmm...that's strange I went back to the beginning cuz I couldn't remember Which pics I posted. Now all I see is a couple of b.c. skiing pics. Does anyone else see pics of a still?.....Strange I dunno maybe that photobucket server scrambled things up?

LOL... yeah those are a couple pictures from last year. Ski touring is another passion of mine. I was pretty surprised to see em there on the distillers forum...oh well anyone who was interested probably saw the still pics before.

This is very interesting to me and also above my head, but the pictures would be nice to see, I'm just seeing pictures of 3 dudes on a snow covered mountain, no still in sight!!!!!!!!!

No not a joke there used to be still pics there. I uploaded a half dozen ski pic to that server a couple weeks ago. Those couple must have been assigned the same image tag as the still pics... if I get some time later in the week, I will try to straighten them out.

UR --the ski pics have been there for a couple of weeks at least. the still pics are represented by X s in a box. I was anxious to see your keg and collumn valved reflux device.----BTW, how is your irish whiskey style with roasted barley comming?

UR. Great looking outfit. It really shows some well thought out planning and lots of hard work. That was really some killer scenery on the skiing trip, also.

Very nice UR. What precautions , if any , are you taking for cooking inside? I would like to use my garage as this morning it was a balmy-3 but thought I might accumulate to many vapours that could go boom . I do brew beer in the garage and have never had a problem with propane fumes , although I do crack the door a tiny bit.

Hey Possum,

It turned out really good, the mash bill was half corn half roasted barley.
It is not quite an Irish whiskey, but it has a very nice flavour.

I got another mash I'm going to run tonight that is all malt, about half also roasted. It is a wonderful tasting beer, I'm almost tempted to carbonate and bottle it (it would be too strong for beer 11%). My partner and I built a pot still (will post pics soon) so we're going to run whiskey in it for the first time and see if we like it better than whiskey made in the reflux still.

Jim,

The shop we are cooking in is quite big. Vapours have never been a problem. We do keep a couple windows cracked and have fire extinguishers handy. We collect distillate well away from the heat source.
Only -3! It's -22 here this morning, days like this are great to run the still, it heats the shop up nicely, mush better now than in the heat of summer.

Thanks for the post, question I have concerns the hole cut out and stainless bowl you have used. Seems like a good way to have access to clean, but some here prefer to keep the top intact. Would you do it that way again given a choice?

My question to you would be. Why would you need access to clean the boiler out?

Most people realize after molesting a keg. That there really is no reason you would need to get in it to clean that good. A good hot water spray out is usually all that's needed. Using the keg as it is. Is the easiest thing to do. And works very well.
