Getting my mash ready for the next run this weekend, I was skimming off the top layer of floating material ( I save it for the next batch as a source of yeast) when I noticed something odd. The floating residue had an oily feel to it, my wife and I make coconut oil and I recognized the feel.
I took most of the stuff I skimmed and placed in a sauce pan and heated until the alcohol boiled off, then I started to see small amounts of oil floating.
Any thoughts on this phenomena? the mash consists of about 15 lbs of corn ( this is from the first mash) 6lbs of oats, and 18lbs of sugar in a 15 gal batch. Any one else see anything similar?

I must say that this was to be expected! Pine nuts contains lots of resins !seedsprout wrote:I used pine nuts as a spur of the moment thing..... There was what looked like chilli oil floating everywhere.... The pine nuts made the whole thing oily feeling in your mouth, Haven't stilled it yet but I hope the oil doesn't come threw.
Keep us posted on the results, I am curious how this will turn out !
