Re: Crystal Head Vodka
That was super funny... I don't buy a word of it. I'm happy making vodka in a VM with cuts that no large distiller can replicate cost effectively. Then I store it in anything glass and I bet it's comparable. I loved the distillers accent, totally newfie and very Canuck.
I'm betting it was real vodka in the glass Dan drank, he's a well known drunk.

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
WHHHEWWWEEEEE...That's some awful stuff. I had a tasted of a couple of weeks back and man, is it rough. I went to a bar while on vacation/work trip. Me and my bud sat down and couldn't figure out what we wanted to drink until the crystal skull caught our eye. Being a drinker of fine vodkas and very particular about them, I asked if it was good....you know it ain't good when the bartender selling it says it's bad! She even poured a free sample for my friend and myself....mercy was she right! (You know you're getting suckered in if the bartender is giving you free samples!!) Needless to say we moved on. My friend tried to bargain with her to get her to pour out the bad vodka and let us take the skull bottle home....no luck there though...
Recommendation for crystal skull: move on and take it off the top shelf!

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
I'm thinking about buying a few just to use as bottles of my own. I know the vodka's gonna suck, but I suppose I can get shitty on it one way or another, and then I have a couple of cool bottles.
Maybe I can pick up empties on ebay.
Just checked... they want MONEY for those things.

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
I've never tried any, but my feeling is that it is something you buy for the bottle, not the vodka. Diamonds in the vodka???? You gotta hand it to the marketing guys.

They say you need a "story" to sell. Well, the skulls have a history of forgery:

Kudos for the next distillery using gold equipment instead of copper.
EDIT: More lulz :

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
Did a HD google search for "skull vodka" on a whim. Tried some at my sisters, 2 weekends ago. Didn't know it's background...but thought it was great, incredibly smooth and better than my Grey Goose test bottle.
I still can't get my vodka to have that smoothness....I wonder if it just needs some aging? I feel I make pretty conservative cuts and pull at 92-93%
Or.....comparing my impression to those listed above, I have poor tastebuds

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
Just playing Devils Advocate here; checked out several respected vodka/whiskey review forums and they all pretty much raved about it. I know, to each his own, but maybe we shouldn't prejudge the vodka because of the bullshit bottle and silly hype about filtering through Herkimer diamonds (very possibly the silliest hype I've ever read) and the crystal skull mythology. It may be good vodka in spite of these things.
Having said that, it would have to be spectacular for me to pay $50.00 for a 750ml bottle.

Re: Crystal Head Vodka
I was gifted one for my birthday this year. I poured it into an empty liquor bottle and filled the skull with mead for a friend who collects crystal skulls. I had a shot during transistion, it's not bad. I was drinking mead at the time so I probably didn't get a real good read of it's specific flavor but I'd still rather drink my own then pay that kind of price for a cool ass bottle...the bottle is as cool a bottle as I've ever seen but it is not cheap.
