How to filter booze ?.

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

How to filter booze ?.

Post by ludwigs9th »

I'm not talking about carbon filtering.

I'm talking about solids like spices or those from infusion. I've been using a coffee filter in a funnel, but OMG is that slow! Today I tried to filter a spiced and somewhat syruppy concoction and after a few drips it was completely clogged. Then I tried a paper towel instead of the coffee filter. This worked only a little better.

I've had the best results by allowing solids to settle first, then pouring off the top. It's less than perfect, but I'd only have to filter the last stuff out.

There must be a better way!

Thanks

don't add sugar until after filtering/make up a "teabag "for the spices/use hole spices when possible.

Maple syrup makers use a special felt sleeve to filter product. It is easy to wash and reuse. Look up any maple syrup supplier for nearest source. Paint filters for spray painting look tempting but I am not sure about how the mesh is attached to the paper part. Someone here will know, Coffee filters are slow but so is aging!!

the funnel it so slow because the only area that is really draining the the pipe at the bottom what you need is to go to a kitchen supply joint and get a Chinois and some fat filters to fit (use to clean the oil from a deep fryer, I'm a chef and use one every day) will filter just as good or better than the coffee filter and take seconds to do it

Coffee filters are slow and they always break when you least want or expect it. The answer is to use a tampon (preferably un-soiled) stuffed into the funnel and your problems will be over. :)

I've used cotton balls stuffed in the funnel with decent results.

Ok, lets not drag this one TOO far off topic. Have a grin with the comment, but don't kill the thread.

I've used the cotton balls in a funnel too. Works well. Get yourself a big funnel that holds a couple of litres, then sit it in a saucepan fill it right to the brim and walk away. It still takes a while, but you dont watch it the whole time like you do with coffee filters.

I like the tampon idea.. at least ya got a string to get it out after you've finished doing the straining

You should be able to find layerd cotton mat and place it in a collinder. That should take everything out without cloging.

Amazing how much better a little wad of pure cotton will do than coffee filters! Coffee filters always left some fine sediments in my product after a day or two of settling. No sediment with one run through some cotton.

One thing you will want to be sure is that the cotton balls you are using are 100% cotton and not something else, which my wife tells me is sometimes polyester....which I thnk is a plastic???and isn't it against our relegion here to have our product in contact with plastic??? just sayin.....now the contact may be limited and not that bad a thing....but??
