airing out cuts ... in the sun
Any safety concerns airing out my cuts in the sun? I'm thinking a slightly warmer distillate might air quicker and more thoroughly. I accidentally left out a jug of heads in a place that gets partial early sun and when I went to check my cuts that are in the shed I grabbed the heads jug and noticed it was warm and very aromatic. I've tucked it inside the cooler shed until I could figure out if it's a safe procedure. I'm thinking it's fine because the jug's not THAT hot, just nice and warm and very well ventilated. I just thought I'd check here first. Thank you, bd.

Can't see a problem if the area is well ventilated, and there are no ignitions sources nearby.
Cover the open jar tops with some thin cotton gauze or similar to keep out dust and insects.

bd are you wondering if the heads are now safe to drink after airing in the heat of the sun thus evaperating the fores out? If so that is a good question on my end but who knows I am enjoing some rum right now. Cheers!

I just wanted to be sure it's safe, even though I knew it was safe, given all the ventilation (the universe). Yeah, just wanting to speed things up. No fores just nice transitional heads. Hope with time they'll ease up and reveal their secrets. Happy drinking. Cheers, bd.

It seem you are trying to evaporate the undesirable aroma out of you product..
altho it may achive this in a shorter time "havent tried it" you would loose more product to evaporation.
I have found it is just a time thing, call it what you like but i look at it like chips left out on the table
over nigh they go soft, stale and flavout less, just the way i like my Cheezls
i leave my swill to air in a cool area for 3-5 days on dark toasted and partialy chared oak chips, then place in a 5Lt barell.
the barells make the swill drinkable faster then any oak chips.
I have 2 5Lt oak barells i place my fresh swill in one and drink out of the other, as the drinking barell empties i top it up from the first, then top it up.

Good points Decoy. Nothing worse than overnight Cheeto's. I find the fruit based stuff tricky. It's elusive at best. Had a shot of store bought French Calvados last night and it's amazing stuff. This afternoon I got this whiff of tails around the kitchen and I thought it was one of mine but no, there was a little Calvados left in the shot glass. When I pressed it up to my nose, it was tails that smelled a little like rosehip (part of the apple family, or vice versa), no mistaking it. Last night it was all oaky soft heady apples, tails in the morning. I guess that's the point you're making
Cheers, bd.

Yes, you would trading off time against the rate of evaporation. The higher the rate of evaporation, the less time it needs.

just found this post.... i also have found when leaving a bit of shine in the bottom of a glass the next day or two days later all thats left is tails. pretty gross, but also pretty amazing goes to reinforce the basic mechanics of all this.
also that i left too much tails in it!
