cloudy after diluting
When i first started 3 years ago i had no problems with cloudyness, now when I use UJSM recipie I let it sit for a month (72% to 65%) with a coffee filter over the top of a gallon jug, held on by a rubber band so nothing can get in, but it can still breath. Now when I am ready to drink it I dilute it down to 80 proof with distilled water, it turns cloudy WHY? I can still drink it and it taste fine, but i don't understand why it turns cloudy. Before diluting it is clear as can be. Any help would be great.

so could this come from the black oil that i have seen on the top of the alchol sometimes, and if so will filtering it through a coffee filter, or a carbon filter take care of it.

Mite be the corn, some they add oil, you could be carrying that over. try freezing , and then filtering.

Re: cloudy after diluting
cloudiness indicates precipitation.
whatever is coming out of solution is less soluble in the water than the fairly nonpolar high proof spirit. oils are a good bet.

Carbon would strip a lot of the flavors along with the cloudiness.

Re: cloudy after diluting
Good question Hawke. I have seen tails get cloudy. I just threw away a jarful. That seems the most likely explanation - oils come over in the tails. Often it will make a sheen on top of the liquid, and emulsified oils can be very hard to get out. A long time ago I was a chemist and dealt with that often. We had emulsion breakers, but those are detergents or related chemicals and would ruin the drink.
