Sugar Wash Issues... HEEEEEEEELP!!!
Well gents, I know that there's some similar postings to this, but maybe one thing that I'm doing will jump out as the culprit. I'm doing a standard sugar wash, two pounds to one gallon of water. I'm using the exact same water that I use for my grain wash (so I'm assuming it's not the water). After boiling the water and adding the sugar, I bring the temp down to 75 Faren and add fermax nutrients (1 tsp per 5 gal), mix up real well, then add a yeast that's been started up prior to pitching (same yeast I use for my grain mash). Being that I've only really done grain-based mashes, I'm not familiar with how the sugar wash actually looks when fermenting. Will it bubble up like crazy on top, or simply just have bubbles like a carbonated beverage popping? I can see bubbles and get some CO2, but not sure if that's just a slight amount of fermenting. The real issue I'm having heartache with is the brix readings/ gravity readings. They don't really change from beginning to end. I'm about to run the wash today and see what the heck happens, but I'm not feeling very confident. Again, this is quite perplexing to me because I have been doing grain mashes for years and it seems that the sugar wash should be a step down in difficulty. Any feedback will be most appreciated as I'm trying to develop some liqueurs with this once we distill it out.
