Hi All,
A friend keeps hassling me for a Bunderberg Rum. Having a Reflux Column still I have put it off until now.. however im curious.. am i wasting my time with a column still ?
By removing the packing can i get Rum like qualities ? or is it too far away from it ?
Also, does anyone have a recipe for a Bunderberg Rum ? from wash to essence ?

Use Pugi's rum recipee, works well
I sometimes use my reflux still to run rum out and don' t have any trouble at all. Try leaving the packing in, it will aide in heads removal and when there out, run it full open.
I have tried with packing in and packing out and the difference between the two ain't worth the time and trouble of removing them and then replacing.
The pot still is the way to go but if ya ain't got one use the still ya got.
Bundy rum is coarse and nasty, any rum you do from molasses and sugar will beat it hands down.

When you say "once the heads are out run it full open" what do you mean ?
Im still getting the heads part refined... however what do you mean about full open ?
From a 25 Litre wash and a 1 Meter Column reflux, what amount of heads would normally come out ?
Also, with the Rum Recipe i presuming your refering to the following post

Your column i presume has a valve, either needle if it is a liquid management still or a gate or ball valve if vapour management.
Running full open means to open the valve right up.
You may have to reduce the heat input after the boil so you get a nice stream.
As for the amount of heads/ fores that you take off is dependent on the way you drive the still, ie how long are you prepared to equalize for and how slow you take them off. Also some of the late heads combined into the hearts will enhance the final product.
If you have already run neutral washes you should have some idea of the amount you get.
That is the post to go by.

Hi,
I dont have any valve
its just a column with packing in it... and a Condenser on the end..well kinda..
it does have a water condenser flowing through the bottom of the still column and 2 through near the top..
Should I be looking at upgrading ??

With that type of column, I would pull out the packing and only run the water in and out of the condenser.
If you don't run any water through the pipes in the column you have a standard pot still.
If the packing is too hard to get out, then leave it in.
