CARBON: activated or not
is it possible to use regular carbon (charcoal) to clean the distilled products.or do i have to use only activated, and what could be the difference betwen them (in results)
if not, can i reuse the activated carbon, -- how, how many times--
and is it possible to make your own activated carbon, i have read that it is made by an uncomplete burnig of some types of wood along with some salts. actually this part im more interested in than all the rest

some activated carbons can be re-used and some can not. The ones that can you can use them, clean them, use them, clean them until you have nothing left. Yes you can use charcoal it is just less effective then activatied carbon.

From memory: activated carbon just has a smaller size then normal carbon (charcoal) or it has a greater internal pore stucture. Anyhow it boils down to a bigger surface area which results in better removal of unwanted components.

Activated is the only way to fly. Most of the beneficial effect of activated carbon results from the zillions of micro-cracks and pores on its surface. Activated carbon has a surface area as high as 2500 square meters per gram! It is this exposed surface area that impurities stick to, as well as the small pores that are about the size of the molecules you're trying to trap.
You can re-use activated carbon by spreading it out on a cookie sheet and warming it in an oven at around 300 F for an hour or so (until you don't smell contaminants coming off of it).

I thought that you boiled it in a few changes of clean water and then baked it.

That's what I do. First I put it in a sieve and rinse it to get rid of the dust. Then I boil it for 15 minutes. Change the water and then boil it again. Then I spread it on a baking sheet and put in the oven at 160C/320F until it is dry again. Reeks up the house but oh well.
