saving water
anybody got any ideas on how to save water, without using electricity?
we have major water restrictions on at the moment and not a got idea to use too much water.

What I plan on doing is get a surplus AC condenser to circulat the water through. I have a resivior bucket and pump that I circulate though the liebig, but find that I have to change the water out because it gets hot. So instead of dumping it I am going to get the condenser and disapate the heat before returning it back to the bucket.
If your interest in finding surplus equipment do a google search for the
Surplus center, they are located in Nebraska.

I use a closed recirc system with pump and cooling fan that together draw less than a single household light globe. 77 watts, bugger all when you stack that up against the 1000+ watts used in electric stills. Sketch here...

Loses about 25 litres/year due to evaporation.

water reticulation
Hi All,
New here but like what I see. Going cross-eyed soaking up all the threads and comments/ideas in them.
I am in the process of building an offset head reflux still. I am intending to tap into my backyard pool's filter pump outflow via a hose and in-line tap for cooling the head. The filter system is alongside my garage and adjacent to a window where the still will be located. Any constructive comments on this intention would be welcome.
Cheers,
OldStormy

Pool power
Hi All,
Once again, thanks guys. After reading here and using a few of my remaining brain cells I have scratched the pool water idea. I don't fancy the 'Grayson Green' in my pipes.
At the time of my idea I was just thinking 'water' not 'fresh or salt/chlorine water'. Might try and see if I can pick up a cheap PVC tank and redirect my downpipe to it then use a submersible pump. The large volume should prevent the water heating up too much.
Cheers,
OldStormy

Now I never said it wouldn't work to run pool water through the condensor coil. I've got a friend that uses a pump to circulate his pool water through his condensor. And I don't blame him at all, I can't think of a larger heat sink than a swimming pool. I believe he hooks the garden hose up to his condensor coil after a run and flushes it with tap water for a few minutes. He hasn't said anything about there being a problem so far.

Pool water
Hi Grayson,
Will give it some more thought. Not sure I want chlorine water running through the pipe but who knows, it is available, it is cool and there is lots of it. A few weeks down the track yet before I have to get serious on that side of it.

Good Ideas
Hi Guys,
Lots of good ideas on the forum. Like Grayson's idea of using the pool as it is a great heatsink and simply flushing the pipes out with fresh water after - back into the pool. I am not going to worry anymore about it for now as first up is build the still (in progress).
