Can the column be off centre?

I've noticed that all still designs have a column that is in the centre from the boiling chamber. Is this crucial? I've located a 28 lt ss drum that already has an ideal opening at the top to attach the column, except that it is off the centre. For example think of where the opening is on a coke can and this will give you a fair idea of where the opening is on my 28 lt ss drum. At the end of the day, hot vapour rises, and will be drafted into the column...Right?
